Nero 6 Bug could delete your Hard-Drive!!

A German online magazine PCwelt.de reports that Nero 6 contains a 'bug' that could delete your entire harddrive. The bug is introduced with the Nero 6 Recode project. Bug might even not be the correct word for it, it seems more that Ahead forgot to limit the feature to empty the destination folder for temporarily files.

If this destination directory is set to the root of a disc (e.g C : ) and if the question: "Destination folder is not empty, do you wish to clear it" is answered with yes, all files will be deleted.

Here is the description (badly)translated from the german site using babelfish:
Who clicks now over-hurried on "Yes" and had selected as goal file a root listing, short time experiences later its blue miracle: not only a "Video_ts" file put on in the goal file in former times is deleted, but also all other files and file on the partition concerned are deseamed within seconds by the plate. The user is nevertheless asked still whether he wants to delete the files.

A "Design error" is not however nevertheless. Because actually the user should assume "Nero Recode" means the existing "Video_ts" file in under "the target folder" indicated drive assembly and/or listing.

For now we would advise visitors to be carefull with this feature and to make sure to answer no on this question. There is no doubt Ahead will release a fix for this nasty feature soon.

@soundforbjt please post the german article here in GERMAN and our resident GERMAN users will translate it to something more intelligable for us thanks bud :)

Basically from what i read if U have the temp folder in the root of the C:\ , then when nero recode asks if it should empty that location, it will delete all fies there in that location includin the whole C:\

That was roughly what it was talkin about:)

But Duracell & other will know more than me, my german ain't 2 good:)

BaNzI:D

here a quick translation:

fact 1:
in Recode's configuration menu you can change the used "Temp" and "Final Target" folder;

fact 2:
if you want to do a 2. transcoding project, then Recode asks you "Destination folder is not empty, do you wish to clear it?"; if you answers "Yes" Recode will delete those folders content;

fact 3: "the bug"
there are absolutely no limitations to choose an own "Temp" or "Final Target" folder;

and now the bad, bad, bad circumstance:
you choose the root of your system drive "C:\" as "Final Target" (or "Temp" folder);
and now you want to do a 2. transcoding project, then Recode asks you "Destination folder is not empty, do you wish to clear it?"; if you answers "Yes" then your system is gone, because Recode tries to delete the complete content of "C:\";

Greetings from
Duracell
