NERO 6.6.0.16 Validation Errors...

Hi guys!

I wonder if anyone out there can help me?

I have a Sharp PC-GP2520 Notebook PC (P4 2.0GHz - 512Mb DDR etc.) and am running Windows XP Professional SP2.

I have purchased a Safecom 5.25" External Firewire caddy and a Philips DVD/RW drive (OEM - PBDV1628B) from ebuyer. Unfortunately, the DVD drive seems to be suffering a few teething troubles, at first I couldn't get it to write to discs (CD-R / CD-RW / DVD/RW) for more than about 40 secs. Then after ensuring the internal IDE channels on my notebook were both set to DMA, and changing the standard crappy 4pin to 6pin 1394 cable to a better one, I seem to have cured this problem.

The only problem I have now is that copied CD's and DVD's don't always work - I decided to try the Data Validation feature of Nero and lo and behold, the written data does not match the source data. After testing about 4GB of data there was about 300 data validation failures on a single DVD/RW

The drive has been tried in a desktop PC and appears fine, and I have tested the caddy with a 3.5" Hard Drive and this is also fine.

Any idea's guys and gals???

Have you tried a different brand of media ?

Maybe the results on high quality dvdr +/- will be better than on dvdrw.

Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are well known for their good blanks.

I've tried a number of different media brands to no avail :-(

Have now found the problem though!! I swapped DVD/RW drives with a friend to see if my drive works in his desktop and if his works in my caddy. His NEC 3530 works perfectly in my caddy, burnt a couple of CD's and over 4400Mb of data onto a couple of DVD's with no problems at all!

And, my Philips failed once in his desktop too so just goes to show! It's going back to ebuyer and I've just ordered an NEC 4550 in it's place, so fingers crossed it'll work fine too

try burning slower than the rated speed of the media you have not given the speed of the media you are using so far and how fast you are attempting to burn !?

NEC burners are the best shot for their money, that's no secret... also they have tons of available unofficial firmwares.
ND4550A is a fairly new drive so you may have to wait a bit for mature firmware, but it ought to be great.

I tried burning at lower speeds too and again this made no difference.

I tried the drive on Nero Drive Speed over the weekend - creating a Data Disc on Philips 4x DVD+RW (manufactured by Ritek) with data validation switched on and the drive gave 3962 errors on 1 DVD!! The Disc Quality screen said the entire disc was damaged (yellow sectors) but the disc is brand new!!

I then tried a Memorex 4x DVD+RW (manufactured by Philips, according to Nero!) which gave comparable results! The only thing I can think of is that my drive is a faulty one.

However, the NEC should arrive today!! I'll keep you guys posted to how it goes!!!

Dependant on the chipset in the external case it might very well have communication problems with the philips burner. Any new firmware for the case? Possibly try it in a case with another chip.

Hi guys!!

Well, the NEC ND-4550a arrived today and works a treat!!

I think it may have just been a faulty Philips unit, or as bionic says, maybe the Philips just isn't compatible with the caddy chipset.
I contacted the caddy manufacturers for firmware updates but there were none.

I also contacted Philips for firmware updates but they said that as the drive is a bulk drive, they do not support it!! Nice customer service!!
