Hi guys, I'm thinking about adding new hdd to my system. I'm looking at Maxtor 40 or 60 GBz 7200 rpm ata 133. But I'm not sure if it's worth it and/or if my system can handle it. Can you guy give me any suggestions?
This is my system info.

1. Pentium celeron 1.7 GHz
2. Soyo P4S dragon
3. Power supply 350W, but a cheap one, come with case.
4. 2 hdds 15 & 40 7200 rpm ata100
5. 5 fans running, cpu fan, chip fan, case fan, PS fan, extra case fan.
6. 2 fans available ( for hdd) not running at this time
7. 1 dvd rom and 1 cdrw
8. Graphic card, modem 56k
9. 2 raid ide available.

My concern is about Power Supply which is a cheapo one, becuz now I connect every plug available from PS. And If I add new ATA 133 hdd I must first expand from old cord for hdd and then for a fan to cool hdd. Next concern is raid ide, I'm not sure what setting should I use. But if i can I would set it like regular hdd..not raid function.

Hiya ya

I don't know about compatibility. Somebody else will have to steer you on that point.

But if you are gonna get a 60GB HDD then look at this one at DealUniversity. 60GB for $60.

The drive is actually at Staples, but this link will provide you the info:

Your motherboard MUST support ata/133 hd. Try to locate manufacturer and model/serial number and do a search on the web. Hopefully you received your "bible" to your motherboard, info would be in there.

Yes, PePsIBoTtLe...I am curious too.

The $60 drive mentioned is an ATA100 (aka, UDMA100) drive. Here is the link: h**p://www.staples.com/Products/SpotLights/020908/448145/Default.asp?

Secondly, even if it were an ATA133 (aka, UDMA133) Maxtor drive (the only ones making them) you DO NOT need an ATA133 controller to run them. It has been proven in test after test that even the fastest IDE Hard Drives have not reached beyond 100mb/s transfer rate. Even if it were, modern hard drives are backward compatable.

So an ATA133 drive would be compatable and will work just fine with an ATA100 controller.

I concur...the hard drive is BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE.It will be fine.It will run at the max.bus speed available by your MB.Your power supply will be adequate.

I have a 250 watt.I'm running a CDRW,dvdrom, 60 gig HD off the main board.I'm running 2/ 40 gig Hd's on a promise controller.No problems whatsoever.
