Need help w/ TMPGnc, version 2.51

i'm trying to convert my avi files to mpeg, but whenever i try to open the source video file in TMPGnc an error message appears. It says it can't open file or the file is not supported. Any suggestions?

What codec was used to encode the AVI? Do you have the proper codec installed? Can you playback the AVI at your PC with Media Player?
Check out the needed codec with GSpot: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

btw: What shall be the destination file/disc? VCD, SVCD or DVD Video?

I can play the avi file on my divx player. I'm trying to convert it to burn onto VCD.

This could also be a problem with the audio if the avi is XVID you may find the audio is in MPEG format so you will need to make sure you have a suitable mpeg audio codec decoder installed :)

i had a similar problem it would play find in a windows player but refused to convert :(

my soution was 2 different ideas that both worked ..

one use VIRTUAL DUB and strip out the audio to a wav file and encode with the wav for audio and use the video from the divx :)

the second was to install a different mpeg audio decoder and convert :)

thanx for the help guys, i finally got it to convert, but now i have another problem: after i burn the converted file on to a cd-r, my dvd players won't play the disc. Both my players can read VCDs.

Did you produce a standard video file?
Video: MPEG-1
352x288 pixel, 25 frames per second (PAL)
342x480 pixel, 29.97 frames per second (NTSC)
Audio: MPEG-1 Layer2
sampling rate 44,1 kHz, bit rate: 224 kbit/sec mode: stereo

What software did you use to master and burn your VCD?
Did you set all needed check marks to ensure it's VCD standard?

Are both players VCD2.0 compatible?

if video and compilation is really standard and won't play: it could be worth to try an other media brand, i.e. to change from "short" to "long strategy" dyes (or reversely);

btw: Did you discover CM's great tutorials already? http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=161

I think it is how you burned your VCD as Duracell indicates, did you also make sure you closed the disc?

As Viper said if it was Xvid then using Virtualdub to strip the sound out is the way to go. :)

The file is VCD standard, i used CM's tutorial to do it.

I used virtual dub to extract the audio.

I used the software that came w/ my pc to burn it: RecordNow

i've no other ideas this moment;
