Hi, I am thinking of burning some DVD back-ups.
I have yet to purchase the writer, was thinking of the RICOH MP5240 + format at £80.
I have read some tutorials which lead me to believe i need shrink, decoding & burning software.
Is this the best or only way?
I would prefer some "one click" software. Does Nero 6 do it all or DVDXcopy maybe??
If I need all three softwares which should I choose considering the + only format.
I am running windows 98 SE
Thanks

P.S Have been ripping previously using DVD player to DVD recorder with a microchipped scart lead. If anyone needs advise on that I could help!!

I would recommend the pioneer 106 or 107. You can pick them up for little mor the the ricoh but they are dual format which means greater compatability in the long term. A 1 click software option could be anydvd and clonedvd working sise by side. Aanydvd over rides the copy protection of the dvd and clonedvd will do the rest. As for win98 I cant comment as I only use windows xp pro. I did use windows 2000 as well but the reasons for using these was to have an ntfs file system on the HDD to avoid the 4GB file size that FAT32 has.

@ byngo,

You might have some problems working with DVD's when using a FAT file system-based operating system (Win98). FAT limits file size to less than 4 Gigabyte (GB). Windows 2000 and Widows XP uses NTFS file system and does not have the 4 Gigabyte file size limitation.

I was using Windows ME and had to switch to Windows XP because of the 4 Gigabyte file size limitation imposed by Win ME when working with DVD's.

If you look in the right places you can get a Lite On LDW-451S (4X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 4X(-R) 2X(-RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD±R/RW) for less than a hundred bucks.

I just got one from Wal-Mart for $98.87. It works flawlessly.

I go with 106 Pioneer >< there are a few teething probs with the 107 >< Ive heard the new NEC 8x is good too.

Regarding Op system U can get by in FAT 32 but its nowhere as good as NTFS when it comes to messing with the large files U get with DVD burning etc.(& 2000 & XP are just better than 98 anyway)
Start now & get NTFS U wont be sorry.

Thanks for the advice.
A "whizz kid" at work also reckons I can get by in FAT 32 but says i should add a 120GB hard drive and do not add another O.S because with my RAM at 128MB the 2000 or XP would really sloooooow things dowwwwn.
He said I could upgrade my RAM but a compatible type would only be available from DELL now as the system is 6 years old.
I'm not sure what to do now.

Get a new rig bud 128mb RAM will have probs dealing with DVD stuff & @ 6 years I reckon
Your MOBO & processor wont be to hot & will not take to upgrading Kindly.

Have a new puter made up as U want >< dont go for a name puter they often have problems with upgrades etc.
