nec 2510A "found new hardware" problem

I've had this drive for about a month and all this time Windows "found new hardware" at startup. Very annoying!
Nec doesn't have drivers (or is it firmware) for it. It works fine without that. So there is no way to update anything. Also, selecting the option that should stop Windows informing me about this "new" hardware doesn't work. Selecting or not selecting it doesn't make a difference.

The NEC helpdesk gave me this link http://www.de.nec.de/faq_detail.php/id/573/frage/300/lang/ENG
but I don't really understand what they mean. For example, where is this "Monitor" folder?

Any suggestions anyone?

FWIW here's my interpretation of the NEC page you linked to:

1. Delete the folder - C:\DRIVERS\MONITOR
(I don't have this folder in my installation of XP Home - is that your problem, you don't have it either?)

2. In Windows Explorer, select Tools >Folder Options... from the top menu.
In the Folders Options box select the View tab and under Advanced settings: tick the show hidden files and folders button.

3. Delete the file - C:\WINDOWS\INF\INFCACHE.1

4. Empty your desktop Recycle Bin.

I would just change the names of the files, instead of deleting them - in case things don't work right once they're disabled, they could easily be restored.

No "monitor" folder here either and deleting infcache.1 doesn't do anything.

Well, that was really great help from NEC.
Did you read this:"If problem cant be solved, pls. contact manufacturer of your PC package." I bought my pc at a supermarket. It's not very likely I'm gonna get much help there.

Me thinks NEC could have tried a bit harder to find a way around this problem with their own hardware themselves.

Just wondering if you did an "upgrade" to XP,or clean install? Is the aspi layer okay?It can help with drive detection problems.

Try getting the registry checker/driver clean tool here.

No, I didn't install or upgrade XP. I bought the drive a few weeks ago, connected it and that should have been all. It's working fine, but Windows keeps insisting on installing a driver for it every startup.

This is the message from the device manager:
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

Impossible, because NEC doesn't offer drivers for the 2510A.

I have just installed aspi, but that doesn't help either.

Think it's a software conflict now, based on that error message. What burning software do you have installed.May be an upper/lower filter registry problem. What operating system you using?

Windows XP.
I don't think it has anything to do with the burning software. All programs that support the drive work fine. At the moment I have Burnatonce and Burn4free (I'm still waiting for the Prodvd registration key, to get dvd support with BAO).

Try removing the device from Device Manager and using the Add New Hardware wizard to redetect it.

manufacturer that would be NEC then as they manufacturer or make the drive..... the supermarket would be the retailer or seller of the drive ?!

if you are not satsified or happy i would suggest take it back to the supermarket and take it up with the manager for a full refund how long have you had the drive !? and how long have you been attempting to get it to work !?

check and recheck the ide cabled that they are inserted fully and the right way round it can happen that they can be not pushed in fully or even put in upside down and cause a failure or none detection !?

try a different ide cable the cable may be broken or worn ?!

you should be entitled to a full refund as you havent been able to get it to work in your system ?!

or perhaps try it in someone elses machine !?

How is it connected to your system?Master or slave?Which ide cable is it connected to,40 pin or 80 pin?
What busmaster drivers are installed? :)

What I don't understand is why this option (after letting Windows search for, but not finding any drivers) doesn't work:
"Don't prompt me again to install this software."

Switching master\slave didn't help either.

My geuss is that you might need to configure the Bios to detect a drive on that channel even if it's a DVD (my BIOS has the options to set AUTO or OFF for each IDE device) to keep XP from needing to set it up each boot.

If you got your pc at Aldi's in the US and its a Medion you might find help with the problem at http://www.medionusa.com/ or by calling.

Great support from NEC once again (after I asked for help a second time) :

"if these steps (
http://www.de.nec.de/faq_detail.php/id/573/frage/300/lang/ENG ) won`t solve your problem,
you can only contact Microsoft Support Center for further help, we do not
develop any system / atapi drivers for windows versions."

I asked them what exactly was causing the problem and apparently they don't even know.
It can't be every owner of this drive is confronted with "new hardware" all the time. I think my version of XP is up-to-date, so it looks like I'm stuck with the problem.

mate, if you like to get further assistance from us, then please try our suggestions and answer our questions; the boys didn't talk chinese to you; Or do you have the ignore mode activated?

Or just simply remove it (the "Code 28" marked device) from device manager and restart.

Found someone who had the same problem and solved it here:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1032742&arctab=arc&highlight_key=y&keyword1=new hardware found
I don't understand exactly why XP couldn't find the .dll in the first place or how he directed it to the .dll when he found out that's what it needed. I would try updating the driver through Device Manager if directing the Found New Hardware Wizard to the missing file doesn't work.

Assuming you know how to get to Device manager, the following are just the Microsoft drivers for my DVD burner listed there - any others listed there are specific to various burning software, so I'm not including them here as they wouldn't be necessary for XP to operate the drive.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\strorprop.dll
I assume the last one is the one CurtisEbear's XP couldn't find on its own.
