NEC 1300a refuses to burn at 1x

I just installed this burner today. I have verbatim 2x data life plus dvd-r's. I'm trying to burn a dvd at 1x, but no matter what program i use it automatically goes to 2x. on another forum a user said he has 1x media and no matter what the burner burns at 2x anyways, which is disheartening. I've tried Nero, Record Now, and DVD Decrypter, all with the same results.

its an NEC 1300a with latest firmware (v1.08) manufactured in Nov. 2003.
-windows xp, xp 1900+, nforce2, 512mb

any suggestions?

It cannot burn at 1x on dvd-r.
It is after all a 4x burner .... why do you want to burn at 1x ?
Use good quality media and 4x burning is fine.
It does oddly however burn at 1x on dvd-rw's. ?

Just a note that may help I have an A04 (2x burner) and I burn ritek G03's at 2x and they play on anything that plays back ups. They also play on some that other people say can't play back ups. So I would say for compatibility alot of that has to do with good media. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, I have the A04 (2x) and the NEC 1300a (4x), and I use Ritek G03's and G04's. Burnt at 2x and 4x they are the most compatible disks I can produce.
All G04's that go in my NEC 1300a are burned at 4x.
Had no ritek coasters as of yet but many many dozens of Princo's.
Burn your Traxdata's, Verbatim's, Datasafe's (all Ritek) at 2 or 4x. If your hardware has trouble playing them, its almost definately not the media's fault.
