ND1300A & Ritek G04 not compatible?

I have a new NEC ND1300A with firmware 1.08. I have been able to burn a Verbatim DVD+R, but it was not compatible with my stand alone player. So, I bought some Ritek G04 DVD-R media, since it seems to be highly favored by most. My drive won't even recognize the disc! Whether I try to use Nero or BurnAtOnce, I get a 'no disk' error. Is there anything I can do to correct this? I thought the Ritek was almost guaranteed compatible. Should I exchange this NEC for a different drive?

I'm new to DVD burning and getting frustrated quickly

OK, so I was using the 1.08 firmware from Herrie's site and I 'downgraded' to the 1.07 he has on his site. Now, the burner sees the media and will work with it. I was still getting errors trying to burn a complete disc until I uninstalled the Roxio suite...

it's not only a rumor, uninstalling Roxio's burning stuff is always recommended;
