Musepack=lossy compression format!!!

Musepack is a lossy compression format which is growing faster then everybody was excepting(still no fast enough..couse its a great format)...Its no doubt--in my opinion at least--preffered format for lossy compression...Its introducing much less articifacts then other lossy formats,,but carring it on with a smaller filesize..... :) Only thing which is missing is a bigger hardware support to become a real deal :cool: and is as close to losslless formats as it can be :) ..It is getting updated periodically and provides most software aplications with a plugin of his own for decoding and encoding...Its much faster then all lossy compressions too :) Good thing(in my opinion) is there is not many developers who are involved in that project,so there is no possibility for some kind of"""""xing"""".mpc Still,its missing a support in audio-editors..but hopefully that will be worked-out in near future :) Here is a page where you can find some newest binaries..also link to Frank klemm page too where you can find lots of diffrent olugins and binaries(scroll to the bottom) ....Author-Case is also""tag""author....http://www.saunalahti.fi/~cse/mpc/index.html Try it and you`ll love it :) Also here is a page with simple""how-to""setup eac to work(encode) to .mpc and some other formats like ogg,flac and monkey audio(lossless) and few more :) ..Regarding""making-burning"" of audio cds from musepack"".mpc""files most applications can do it,like Nero,BAO,Burrrn,Media-jukebox............Check it out..You wont be dissapointed... :)

The main argument about it is if encoding at the pretty average --level 5 --xlevel settings is transparent or not. The majority thinks it is, which is a huge improvement over MP3 VBR --alt-preset extreme (which is about the equivalent in filesize). Encoding is damn fast, decoding too, multichannel supported... If there were not the standalone compatibility issues, MP3 would virtually be dead by now.

Trying to think of any sites that have made an ABX test run .... http://www.ff123.net/ - no, not the full set...

MPC seems to be overshadowed by MP3pro, Vorbis and AAC - It loses out by lacking any real promotion - there was talk that it may go open source.

Would be nice to see a really good ABX test at both low and high bitrates, or a "minimum transparent bitrate" test ... that would mean ABX testing different bitrates of the same codec, and finding the lowest that was not rated worse than the original on a statistically significant basis.

For practical purposes, a codec is probably usable if you consider it to be transparent in a less direct comparision - after all, people other than "golden ears" would probably consider cassette quite acceptable - unless comparing directly with a CD.

""""""MPC seems to be overshadowed by MP3pro, Vorbis and AAC"""""First,i putted this thread so mostly people who are starting ripping can have some other choice then""lame,lame;lame""..On side that lame is a great encoder......But for example i was encoding my music at alt extreme--and was sound great..Now i encode to q5(mpc)and still sound great......If you got one wave file and encode with alt extreme and encode same file to q5--you will have a mpc file smaller for 25 or more% which is a great hd space saving :) ..Also for it time it takes to encode one song with lame..you can encode it like mpc in 1 third of time....So conclusion is easy i guess.....And the thing like why is not so many developers pussing mpc-could be a good thing actually couse there is not even one"""bad or low quality encoder""like it is a xing for example in a mpc format...So you know when you download a mpc-its a good file--no surprises....Btw,being overshadowed?????dont think so--didnt try aac yet also :)...Somebody know some page with a link for aac encoder and decoder for using it with eac/////???
