Subtitles in VDub
Hey -
This all depends on the program you are using to make the subs. If you are using SSA (SubStation Alpha), you can use the attached plugin to place subs onto an AVI...well what use is an AVI if you want an MPEG rai? You can use TMPEGEnc or similiar to convert the AVI into an MPEG...here we go...
1. Download the attached subtitler.vdf if you are going to use SSA subs
NOTE: VobSub (the other attached file) will also work with SSA files, but subtitler.vdf works just as well for SSA and is smaller. VobSub is good for other formats. (you can look are the net for utilities to convert the subs to whatever format you need them)
2. If using VobSub, skip to step 3. For subtitler.vdf, place it in the plugins directory for VirtualDub, skip down to step 4.
3. Run the exe to install the VobSub DirectShow Filter and plugin
4. Open VirtualDub
5. Open your MPEG File (Ctrl - O: Open Video File)
6. Choose Video > Filters
7. Click Add...
8. If using VobSub, use step 8b, otherwise use step 8a for subtitler.vdf
8a. Double click Subtitler and give it the SSA (.ssa) file that contains your subs. You can leave the other options alone
8b. For VobSub, you can use TextSub for SSA files and VobSub for .idx and .sub files. Again this depends on the format. The best thing to do when using VobSub is to look at the documentation for the fine points on using it.
9. Click OK until you come back to the main screen
10. Video > Compression
11. Choose your compression options and codec
12. If you want to compress your audio now, you can, it really does not matter - personally, I believe it is useless to compress the audio at this point
13. File > Save AVI...
14. Once that is done, open TMPEGEnc (you can use whatever you want, but my instructions are for TMPEGEnc)
15. Go thru the project wizard and set the options for your project
16. Encode the MPEG and that is it
Hope this helps...
