mpg to divx

I've got a lot of TV show files that I would like to burn onto cd's. The files is howeverer, in mpeg format and takes up more than 400Mb of space. As a result, I can only fit one file on each CD I burn. I have seen and got my hands on, same quality files in avi(divx) format that uses less than the half of what the mpeg files does. So, I have tried with both TempEnc and VirtualDub to do this myself. But, I alway seem to get movies whit a significant lower quality than the "orginal".
There's a lot of settings to DivX, and a lot of mp3 selections to make, making it hard for a novice like to to figure out. I hope someone could tell me the best settings, and if possible, which tools that does this both small and high quality.
I must say I like the idea of makeing a batch file, makin my 'puter work as I sleep...

Hope someone will reply....

as The-poacher said, when you re-encode something you will lose quality, however you can try to optimize with very high bitrates to give you 90-96% quality of the original, but the file size won't be that much smaller.

Normally you set a divx encoder to roughly 750 bitrate off an original DVD (with vidomi) & it can give you a good result, but with nandub (or combo of with GordionKnot) the bitrate has to be around 900-1200 for good results.
I cannot see what the quality of your files are & how long they are (time also plays a role), but those are generally the settings to use.
For sound you would use LAME mp3 (whatever version you have installed), as gives you probably best sound for size ratio & compatibility.

There are many other ways to do things, but in the end you are better off just keeping things in the original format you got.
QUALITY my friend is better than Quantity & size levels most often.

Hope that helps you a little.
Do have a look at the tutorials for more ideas & info & post any concerns or other question you might have.
