mpeg/avi question

hello, dont know if I post @ the right forum, anywayz here is the question, want to know how to convert mpeg/mpg to .avi?

I copied my fav vcd movie in my hard disk, but copying .dat and used vcdgear to convert it to mpg it turn out 600+ MB.

and now want to convert to .avi, to compress the file.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO EXTRACT MOVIE FROM VCD AND CONVERT TO .AVI???

VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod both accept MPEG1 as source. If you are going for a really small size though you might want to compress the audio externally to HE aac, of course that means you can't use avi as a container.

Also keep in mind that VCD's are not 1:1, so you either need to resize to 1:1 before encoding or set the aspect ratio for correct playback (if possible).

mpeg1 is about the lowest quality there is, if you recompress you will be able to make it a little smaller,..but you a going to lose quality whenever you re-compress

I saw the same movie in kazaa, but its in .avi format and its around 350mb, downloaded it, and its clear both in visual(size) and audio just like my 600+mb.
does anyone what I did wrong?

Well if this AVI was not converted from a VCD then the quality could be much better at a smaller size (depding on codecs used, etc.). However as said converting VCD to AVI, don't expect too much.
