MPEG-2 not recognized

I have an ATI all-in-wonder video card. Whenever i record or download anything in MPEG-2 format my computer decides that it doesn't want to recognize the format. Before i installed xp i had no problem playing my mpeg-2 files, but since i upgraded i can no longer play them. I'm pretty sure i have the codec somewhere on my computer because i can record files here, then play them on another computer. If anyone has any tips for me to try, or even a solution i would be much obliged to hear them!

Also, I know that the specialty of this sight isn't about video related matters and I was wondering if anyone is aware of any sights that would allow me to keep up to date with the video side of my computer.

what software are you trying to use to play the mpeg-2/DVD format?
If windows media player, then it doesn't always recongnise things well. Try something else like winDVD or PowerDVD.
Otherwise post back here & wait for more solutions.
As far as video, what do you mean? This site is very good for your video needs (DivX, VCD,SVCD, DVD, Mpeg, Avi, blablablah).
If on other hand you mean hardware, then I would suggest **w.amdmb.com
mainly an amd site, but the main site has geat articles on every bit of hardware (look for bits & pieces)

I've tried to use Media Player and ATI's File Player (came w/ the card). Will try out the two programs you suggested, ATI has a DVD player, but since i don't have a DVD drive i can't do much w/ it, hopefully one of those will allow me to open files.

glad it worked for you Clark. Sometimes it's just a case of trial & error. My windows media player used to be able to play my divx files, but not anymore, so I just use the playa or zoom player to play them now. That's how the ball bounces sometimes.

oddly enough, after i installed and played a few files w/ PowerDVD i was able to play my mpeg-2 files on all my other players as well

PowerDVD added the mpeg2 cplayback codec to your system and other programs can then use it. WinDVD would have done exactly the same.
