mp3 sound degrade info req

i was wondering if for instance you made a music cd from mp3
files and then after that turned those cda tracks back to mp3
would it be degraded at all or is it just the same how many generations can be made like this orignally -cda converted to mp3
then converted back to cda from same mp3

or at least the CD will sound as bad as the MP3, if you don't decode with a flawed decoder and/or introduce clipping in the decoding process.

if you convert the mp3 to wave there should be no further degradation. the only degradation that occurs is wav to mp3 as mp3 is lossy compression.

if you were to recode the wav that was decoded from mp3 back into mp3 or wma for example then further degradation would occur.

as wave is uncompressed converting from mp3 to wav should cause no further loss in quality.

Some decoders WILL deviate from best accuracy - but that is a fault of the decoder, not the process itself.

If you RECOMPRESS an uncompressed MP3 - to the SAME settings, there could be some cumulative loss, but everything that originally had to be discarded to fit that compression level is already gone. If the encoder is PERFECT, then it SHOULD be able to re-encode without additional loss - but such perfection is unlikely!

If you re-encode with a DIFFERENT format - eg. MP3 to OGG, then the compression characteristics are different, and cumulative loss is more likely.

ISTR that somebody did test MP3 re-encoding once, and most noticable was cumaltive dropped sample/offset errors.
