movies freeze then fast forward to catch up

Hi folks
I hope this is the correct forum for my post as it doesn't seem to fit anywhere so please forgive me admin...... if its wrong its unintentional....I searched hard for similar queries &, altho most were in this forum, none seemed to apply! :(
I have read many of the other posts but they dont relate to this prob as it appears to be nothing to do with the burning or conversions etc.

Just in the past few days my movies have been freezing for very short periods....5 secs or so.......& then fast forwarding to catch up with the dialogue which simply continues during the freeze.
I have checked the new movies for errors with divfix & none are found so I tried playing some of my older ones. These are now behaving the same even tho they have not frozen previously! (BTW all the disks playback perfectly on my son's machine!)

The short bursts wouldn't be so bad if it only happened occasionally but it happens all the way through........about evey 4/5 mins or so! (I am developing a stutter in my eyeballs! lol)
It started after I installed a new codec pack so I uninstalled & tried to reinstall all my previous codecs etc (do aspi layers count??) but maybe I have missed something as its still happening?
I did initially try to use system restore but it doesn't work on my pc, flippin pain!!! (I suppose I will have to use the patch so that it will work in future! so many band aids!! lol)

Any help would be much appreciated.........perhaps a list of all the codecs required so that I could check them off! Maybe I have too many & there is a conflict? Is there a prog that will identify & remove all codecs from my system so that I can have a fresh start??....argh......I'm starting to ramble........!

Someone please rescue my sanity.....thanx very much for your time!

Classic ........Install a 'codec pack' and it breaks everything. !!!!
Too late now .. but was there a reason for installing the codec pack ?when all was working ok.( if aint broke .. dont fix it).

'Gspot' can tell you what codecs are required. You could run it on yours and your son's machine and see wot the difference is. But it is not always easy to get the correct one to be used in preference to another. Hopefully installing the codec your son's uses (according to Gspot) will fix it.
Are they all Divx or Xvids ? There are some variations of Xvid codecs, maybe try those.

Hi hamcom :D
I used the 'ace mega codecs pack pro' which was given to me by a friend who is a more experienced video user & encoder etc. I used it as I was told I was missing a codec when trying to play a recent download. I guess its my fault, I probably stuffed something when installing it!

Anyway I followed your advice & checked with g-spot (their are a lot of differences between the codec lists of myself & my son! arghhh)
There are some missing files listed in mine as follows:-

DSH MP43 Moonlight WinDivX Decoder Filter ** File Missing: C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Desktop\mpeg2
DSH AVI_PASS ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\AVI_PASS.ax
DSH DVSD SONY DV Video Decoder ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\sdvvd.ax
DSH 3IV1 3ivx D4 Video Decoder ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\3ivxDSDecoder.ax
DSH MJ2C Morgan MJPEG2000 VFW Decompressor ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\M3JP2KdecVFW.ax
DSH VSSV VSS Decoder Filter ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\vssv.ax
DSH MJPG Morgan MJPEG Decompressor ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\M3JPEGdec.ax
DSH MPEG1 Ligos MPEG Video Decoder ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\lmpgvd.ax
DSH IV41 Indeo® video 4.4 Decompression Filter ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ir41_32.ax
DSH RUD0 Rududu Decoder ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rududu.ax
DSH TM20 TrueMotion 2.0 Decompressor ** File Missing: C:\WINDOWS\System32\tm20dec.ax

Now what I really, really, need to know is how do I delete/uninstall any items on my list? (Without doing any more damage of course...lol)
Is it a case of manually finding & deleting each codec named??
I am a little worried that I will make things worse so further advice would be much appreciated! (especially if it points to an easier & safer method :p )

thanks for replying! :D

You got it in one ! Unfortunately thats the price you pay for installing those codec packs!

hahahahahaha ChickenMan I could just see the glee in your eyes as you posted that!! :D
I have to add tho that it was an aberration on my part....its the first pack I have installed!
I usually just install as required & I actually installed all the codecs on my sons pc & its working beautifully!
Ah well, its just another learning curve.....lol! I'm off to the search now.........cya in a couple of months when I resurface! :p
thanx guys

Or perhaps try installing 3ivX and instruct it to be used for XviD and DivX decoding. It might be able to take full control instantly, without any troubles. Otherwise, uninstall all codec packs, XviD/DivX codecs and AC3 filter related stuff, then install 3ivX and the Moonlight Odio Dekoda (Moonlight Odio Dekoda DirectShow® filter, binary (95,964 bytes, ZIP)).

You could do-away with the installing of codecs and wot-not if something like VideoLAN or MPlayer (also available for Windows) is installed/used. These players are based on the FFMPEG project. They use their own filters for playback.

I have made a note of your info & will look into it a little later! At the moment I am having a terrible time as all the codecs that show as having missing files, cant be found with the search program.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I get rid of them?? (tearing hair out here!!)
thanx

SURPRISE............I'm back........ but still needing assistance! :D
I have reformatted and my codecs are all virginal again..lol (Of course I'm still installing all my other progs, it will probably take me a week or so!)
I am still finding that my videos are freezing then fast-forwarding tho so I still need advice! they are perfectly good copies (tested elsewhere), so its not the actual video!
I havent updated to dx9 yet.....should I????
The divx antifreeze prog made no difference - is that because the disks are in avi format I wonder?.....:( has anyone else used that prog & did it help?)
I am thinking that I need more codecs or filters but dont know which ones and I'm too scared to experiment now! hahahahahahahaha.
I have searched for ac3 filters but they only seem to come as part of a pack........any suggestions?
Thanx for the help so far and I am hoping there is more (so much more) to come! :p

Ahhh ChickenMan........nice to see ya again! :D
I was very very good, I only installed the divx codec from divx.com, the xvid codec that I had on a cd and I have also now been given the ac3 filters I was hunting. I assume that the other codecs in the list were installed with windowsxp.
I have now found that playing the videos in videolan produces perfect results .......my heartfelt thanx to the many helpful people on the web who suggested that one!
I have subsequently uninstalled my windvd player (as being obselete) and will use videolan.......its a much lighter prog too!.........naturally I still get the freezing prob in the other players so if there is an overall solution it would be nice to know!

Thank you for being available! :D

Good to see its been sorted out eventually. Its also not a good idea to have any more than 1 DVD Player installed on any system as well, tyhey each have their own vod and audio codecs and again more conflicts.

You are right, all of those extra codecs you list are from Windows XP and Windows Media Player and are a basic set. No problems with those.

Wobbles, I had the same prob as you, I found that it was my cpu.......so I got a new computer and all was solved. I guess it was over usage of my desktop of something made my cpu not run 100% of the time, thus causing the lag every 10min or whatever.

hope this helps :-/

Well ChickenMan, I am happy to have non freezing movies so I will not be adding any more codecs unless very, very necessary!! (but I'll check here first..........lol) Actually. although it hurt, I think a reformat was due! my machine was full of those 'handy little utils & progs' that I just cant resist! :D

HiBob, your solution sounds even better ( what I wouldn't give for a really grunty machine [[sigh]] )but unfortunately funds wont allow it. ;)
Once again, thanx for all the help everyone!
