Hi & Welcome to our forum! :cool:

Did you changed/installed something before this happened?
i would try updating the IDE controller drivers;
What brand and model (chipset) is your PC's motherboard?

Further Info

I have recently installed NERO

running microsoft XP professional

LG PC Intel (R) Pentium (R) M
processor 1.70GHz
592 MHz
512 MB of Ram

tried what you 've said but no result???????

Yep,go to device manager remove any reference to cdrom/dvdrom drives,reboot.You can also try removing the IDE controllers in device manager so Windows can rediscover all devices attached to them on startup.Look here also.

Still Trying

I started the machine up cold to day and the dvd/cd drive was there.....it was working fine but then vanished again after I had finished installing microsoft office......I tried removing the IDE controllers but that didn't seem to make and difference and I can't remove the cd/dvd devices because they have also disappeared from the device manager..still very confused..lol......

is there anything else I can try?

Is your Cd/dvdrive configured properly?Jumper configured right(slave/master),not connected to raid device?Intel application Accelerator not installed?If everything is okay try method below.

Disappearing drives. This is for when your drives have conveniently disappeared as may happen with XP
Open Regedit, and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Checked for values named

Lowerfilters
Upperfilters

Delete them. Reboot the system.

Still Trying Part Two

I can't find the values Upperfilter or Lowerfilter in the location you suggested.

How to I check that everything is configured correctly - where do I go???

PS thankyou so much for help as you can see I don't really know what I'm doing so thankyou very much.

and if everything is configured correctly is there anything else i can do????

Not much more you can do.Did you install the drive,or was it already in your computer?Are you using the latest version of Nero?

If the drive was working at some point,it is some software you installed.Maybe time to let someone else look at it.

your PC specs are not detailed as we need;
have a look at this posting: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?p=223391

me thinks you have "Intel Application Accelerator" installed; uninstall this thing, reboot, and ensure your IDE controller uses now the M$ standard drivers;
(hint: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?p=210224 )

other questions: How are your drives setup/configuration (controller/channel assigning)? Which IDE cable are you using (40 or 80 wired)?
