MiniDisk players and MP3's info please ?

I am going to buy my son a minidisk player for Xmas, and he is after a Sony - a one that plays 6 hours of playback on one disk, and runs on ONE battery., I thought I had found such through a mate who could get one for HALF the price in the stores - a Sony MZN 707. My son says it doesnt play MP3's, my mate is puzzled and said there is no sodding difference with the one he can get. Now, can you download mp3's to this thing from your PC or not ? And if not how can you get the mp's changed to the format required ? (I'm damned if I'll pay 300% more !)

MiniDisc players cannot play mp3 files per say. MD players instead use ATRAC which is a propritory compression system (codec). So your music files need to be converted from the original to ATRAC compression.

Now, this player comes with a program called NetMD, which will convert these audio files (like waves and mp3s) to that format. Although this software claims to tranfer at 32x, the speed depends on the ATRAC recording mode (4x is standard). It uses 1x USB Port on your PC.

Also important to note is the longer playing modes (called MDLP modes) like the (over 5 hour time you mentioned) is a very high ATRAC (ATRAC3) compression rate which suffers a great deal of dynamic loss and artifacts. Its much better for the spoken word like books on tape. Hard to say if your son will care that much...but its important to note anyway. This ATRAC compression rate can be adjusted to his taste.

The main disadvantage of MD is...once its on the MD disc, it cannot be transferred out digitally like many other digital devices. It's essentially "stuck" on the disc and can only be output in analogue and in real time.

Nevertheless, MDs are fun portable music devices. And since the blank discs are cheap (and easy to swap out), you will not be hurting for "memory space" as the mp3 players do (the main problem with mp3 players).

Have fun! ;)

Hang on - stuck on the disk ? Like you can't rub it off, much like a CDR ?
Sorry, let me be a little more specific than "stuck."

MD discs music files can be erased and be rewritten over and over (about 1000 times according to spec.).

My point is...once encoded in ATRAC on the MD disc there is no way to transfer the digital info on it into another device. Unlike mp3's, waves, CDs...which do not have this limitation. The only way to transfer the info is via the analogue earphones out plug. The digital signal goes in...but not out. There is no ways to digitally "copy" MD discs.

phil k ive just bought a sharp md 200 its lush does all the compression stuff and comes with everything including an addon battery pack, digital audio lead which will connect to most modern cd[players or even your dvd player. if not it comes with audio leads.carry case and them new flash earphones. all for 99 quid at gatwick airport if not argos 127 quid.

I use a Sony device ( PCLK-U5) which is a USB digital audio converter.

It simply converts ( hardware wise) any computer audio to ATRAC3 ( Sony MD-standard). You connect it to a USB port on one end and the optical input at the other end.

Sorry Mal, but your MD cannot play mp3's and wma's. You have to read the small print. Sony has gotten themselves into a little trouble here in the US for advertising that.

However you can transfer any audio files into your MD via the IN port and convert it to ATRAC. It will then "play" those files in its native ATRAC format. There are lots of programs out there that can do that...NetMD is probably the easiest (so long as your player is compatable).

My daughters, that use these sony devices, make their own playlists on pc, then I put a cable from out (in sound card), and in the microphone in MD. Then they play all the songs (take as long time as play all the songs ). Then they got their MD with music...
