Microsoft are surely getting to be close your typical "Megacorp" in a Sci-Fi story, where the world is so dependent on them that they are in charge.
The answer lies in some advice on what a company should do with a totally indispensable employee... "give them a bonus and a golden handcuffs deal"? NO! - arrange potential replacements as soon as possible!
Of course, in the case of Micro$haft, the potential replacements are limited, as we HAVE become dependent.
There's Apple, of course, but if they were #1, they'd probably be worse than Microsoft, with a stranglehold on hardware as well as software.
There's Linux, though for full acceptance, it would need a lot more commercial application developers to embrace it.
