Microsoft reprieve Win98/ME for 2 more years

From a report on another forum, though no good first-hand source yet.

It seems that under pressure from corporate users not ready to implement upgrades to XP, the last of the Win9x series get a a further, and probably final stay of execution - perhaps as some predicted, until the successor to XP begins to roll out, and those who've held off upgrading to XP can jump directly to that.

A few users who only went to XP because Win98 was to go out of support, are said to angry.

Yes, I have read this and the close off is supposedly late 2006. One of their motivations to extend (other than the irate '98/ME users) might have been that so many people went straight to Linux after M$ decided to quit the operating system about 6 months ago.
BTW, the speech is attributed to the head Sharang of M$ Australia.

Not anymore. It's been extended until 2006 for '98 and ME. Let's see if I can get this link working.

I still use 98se, find it a lot quicker on my box than either 2k or XP, so this is good news 4 me, i still think M$ where gonna cancel it untill they got a lot of backlash from users who said why should we upgrade, 98se works fine :)

Apparently, support will continue in the form of patches etc till 30 th of June 2006.

Micro$oft are also considering releasing a service pack CD with all the patches and updates that have been released to date.

It seems this is all part of Williams way of living up to his promise to wipe out spam and viruses, not to mention his Knighthood from the Queen he is receiving soon.

Microsoft now HAVE released the service pack - for Win98-XP, but it dates back to Oct 2003.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp - US/Can, plus several other locations (inc. UK)

If you don't already have a decent level of updates, or you need XP SP1 - then it's not a bad idea especially for dialup users - not sure if it also makes less of a meal of installing patches, as a major trip to Windowsupdate can take (on broadband), almost as long installing!

Yep that cd offer is free, i signed up for it last night after seeing it on another forum, apparently it works with all windows from 98 up :)
