Memory Or Boot Virus!!! Please help

Hi........ my friend is having some problem with his Computer. I went to check what the problem was. This is the problem...

He never had any Anti-Virus in his Computer and each time he tried to open an application or install any program, the application would run only for a couple of minutes and then close. Once, the screen went crazy and started flashing and blinking..... I thought it must be a memory virus, so I tired to install Norton Anti-Virus, but everytime I try to instal, the whole process terminates. Also, when I opened Regedit, it stays opened for a couple of minutes and then closes...... But when I try to reopen Regedit, the file is not there!!! Regedit.exe is always deleted when the regedit box terminates........

How do I remove the Virus (from memory or Boot???) when I am unable to even install Norton???

Please Help.......... Thanks in Advance.

Thanks..........

Thanks Pokopiko for the links. I downloaded Avast and NOD32 for DOS. I will be going to my friend's house tomorrow to have another go at the Virus. Will let you guys know the result......

Thanks

To Strahlen........ yeah I too miss them good ol' "Magic Bullet" days.

Thanks Pokopiko

Thanks Pokopiko.... YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!

I got them (I am correcting my language because of Jasmin and the other gals) viruses off my friend's system...... 53 viruses in total!!!! Can you believe that!!!!

Here's what I did.......

1. I got the NOD32DOS application(1.3 MB) and ran it and it extracted a folder with some files. I copied it onto a floppy and headed for my friend's house.
2. I booted in MS-Dos Mode and ran the application from the floppy and pressed the scan button....... but it gave errors as it was trying to extract some program onto the floppy but the floppy was obviously full.
3. So, I restarted in normal mode and copied the entire floppy onto the hard disk(silly me, I could have done this in Dos mode itself).
4. I restarted in MS-Dos Mode and ran the program from the Hard Disk and it ran like a baby......... it detected 53 viruses!!!! But unfortunately, NOD32DOS could not clean, so I selected the delete option.......... Then, restarted in normal mode, installed Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition and updated through the Internet.......... Everything is back to Normal.............

Thanks once again Pokopiko........... if N.B is giving awards to the best poster, your name would be the first on my list.
