newbie to the site needs help

hi to all of ya out there,
im new to the site but been burning for some time now, but as yet i have not delved too deeply into the video burning side.

however...
i have recently tried to put a divx movie to dvd, following chickenman's (extensive) tutorial and ive hit a silly problem :eek:

first a little tech info that may help

amd1.2 processor
0ver 600mb ram
60 gig hdd
8x4x12 dvd burner
winME
windows media player seven point something (i dont like media player 9..... spyware! :( )

i only use ritek disks at the moment, as they seem to be the most reliable out there.

ok the silly prob, is a codec problem, i think

i have installed (and tried re installing) all the software needed but... i can not play the divx movie in windows media player :(
it plays fine in divx tho.

so whats the codec i need??? where do i get it??? and does this not plating in media player affect the production of the dvd???

these may seem like doh'nut questions but i havent a clue!!!!

any and all help is appreciated.

cheers
geoff

Hi Geoff, Welcome to our forum! :cool:

i'm not really an expert in these things, but i assume "not playing in media player" will effect the encoding procedure;
please check your initial video with Gspot: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ it will tell you the audio and video codecs you need;
also please post the Gspot log file here, so we will be able to help you;

hi again.
well, i did put the above post into the introduce yourself (ok i admit perhaps i shoulda split it up) and it was mooved by a manager/administrator! so thats how that got in here.. i was trying to introduce myself at the same time!

i already have the g-spot programme... it just tells me it has 2 codecs available... both are divx codecs .... so no help there! this happens for all my divx films!!!

i have already spent alot of time searching the site for any relavent help on this site for my problem, again nothing that i have tried works! hence the post!

oh well, that only leves the rulez n regs to read up on.

one other peice of information... windows media player plays the sound ok(of the divx film)... but i never get any picture! so im sure its a codec problem!!!

thanks again

reinstalled again!

thanks m8,
i tried that....again (see top post,so that 3 times ive tried that one) and still i have the same problem!!!
so nope it wasnt that :(

any other ideas anyone?

quite possible that you need XVID installed get the stable build binary here

xvid is a modified version of DIVX and a lot of avi's are encoded in XVID instead of DIVX :)

failed again!

i tried that... still the same prob... sound mo picture!... 20 secs later... the blue screen of death!!!

someone asked for the gspot information... heres as much as i could get... its all turkey talk to me!!!

DirectShow partially succeeded to play file. The actual text of the error or warning is:
0x00040242: VFW_S_PARTIAL_RENDER - Some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format.
The following combination of filters were used:
{C:\WINDOWS\eMule\Inco..-..f Egypt [English].avi} (Video Source)
{AVI Splitter} (Video Splitter)
{DivX Decoder Filter} (Video Decoder)
{Unspecified VFW codec} (Video Post-processor)
{Video Renderer} (Video Renderer)
Special Note: GSpot determined this audio should play, yet it didn't, and the format code is 0x160 or 0x161. This combination of conditions is a likely indicator that the Microsoft WMA codec is attempting to play DivX 3 audio, or vice versa - an unfortunate result of original DivX designers' neglect to use a distinct format code. The ability to play this audio may be dependent on the installation or uninstallation of at least the audio portion of the DivX 3.11 codec. This codec may also be referred to as "DivX audio version 4.0x"

The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:
--> {APvc [DivX ;-) Low]}
{DivX Decoder Filter}
{DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor }
{DivX Decoder Filter}
{3ivx D4 Video Decoder}
DirectShow is apparently able to play the file as well (see "DirectShow Render", above),

Audio Format:
Code: 0x0161
Name: WAVE_FORMAT_DIVX (same as WMA)
Vendor: DivX Networks
The following codecs should both capable of processing this format:
--> {Windows Media Audio}
--> {Windows Media Audio Decoder}
Special Note: This audio format code, 0x160/0x161, is problematic in that may indicate audio encoded with either the Divx 3 or one of the a Microsoft WMA codecs. It is suggested that you press the "render" button and view the results. GSpot will offer special information in that section if there appears to be a problem related to this
DirectShow was also able to find a codec to render it - the sound for this media clip should work fine.

This is a valid AVI file.
The filesize is 590 MB (or 605,144 KB or 619,667,456 bytes).
Of that, roughly 545 MB (92%) is video data; the remaining 45.4 MB ( 8%) is audio.
The file's length is consistent with information embedded within the file, so it's fairly safe to assume that this file is complete - i.e. the file has not been truncated or otherwise damaged.

if anyone can make sence of this... feel free!!! lol

XviD isn't a modified version of DivX.

You have Angel Potion codecs installed? My advice would be to format and not installl dodgy codec packs.

This: {Unspecified VFW codec} (Video Post-processor) definatly shouldn't be in the graph.

The file should play fine via mplayer or VLC as they don't use installed codecs/filters.

Could also try installing ffdshow. It can handle both the audio and video.

i'll take your word for it celt mate as your one of the VIDEO guru's here :)

as far as i was aware it was a hacked modded version of divx !? to give better quality !?

i stand corrected :)

Bit of a history lesson here.

The guys that hacked MS MPEG4 to make DivX 311alpha, started project mayo/open divx with the aim of creating an opensource iso mpeg4 video framework. After some time they got some venture capital, closed the project andreleased the closed source DivX 4.x.

Some people weren't too happy so they took open divx and started XviD.

So both DivX and XviD are in someways a modified version of Open DivX. XviD however hasn't contained one line of open divx code for some time now and I would imagine that DivX is the same.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't lame start off with some reference code? Basically the same situation as that. Take some reference code and build the best open source encoder out there.

But yes XviD gives geater quality than DivX.

Might not be 100% right, but that is how I remember things.

thanks peoples!

cheers that seemed to have sorted it... i knew it was some kinda codec prob!!!

angel potion codecs were causing the prob... all gone now tho:)

media player now plays divx....... well it does after it connects somewhere to download the right one(codec) each time.... but at least it works :)

havent had time to carry on with the burning.

thanks once again guys
