Media causes non-responsive programs/computer

I have searched here and on other sights to find a solution to my problem without success. My hardware details are below. Please note that I have just installed my LiteOn burner, replacing a Pioneer A05. The following problem is identical on both burners except as noted.

I had been burning DVD's for many months successfully using Nero and various 321 Studios software. Media used was Pioneer 1x, Optodisc 1x, Ritek 1x and Ritek 4x. All media was -R. I suddenly could not burn the Ritek 4x. At the point where the software "looks" at the media, everything stops and the program is unresponsive. Burning does not start. Program cannot be closed and only way to shutdown and reboot is to push the botton to power off the computer. I bought some TDK -R 2X and it worked fine. Was halfway through a stack of 25 so I bought and tried another package. It locked up my computer just like the Ritek. Went back to the old package and it now locked up too. Tried a Memorex -RW and it worked ok. Replaced all cables. No improvement.

Pulled the Pioneer A05 and installed the LiteOn 812S. Same problem except that TDK +R 4x burns ok (the LiteOn will write -R or +R). I installed DVDinfoPro to try to learn a little more. If I open the program and put in a -RW or +R it will give me a screen showing the media details. If I insert any of my various -R media (including media that has already been burned with movies that play successfully on my DVD players) the program becomes unresponsive as soon as it looks at the media and the computer is basically trashed. Nero stops at the same place.

I do not know what might have changed on my system that has either caused a conflict or corruption. All bios and drivers are most current. A system reinstall would be my least desireable solution!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi ssart, Welcome to our forum! :cool:

i have not really a clue about your problem, but would suggest to read < this >;
and then check if DMA is enabled, disable IMAPI and install the correct ASPI version;

Yep follow what Duracell said, also maybe make sure that the DVDRW drive is setup as "master" on the IDE channel it is installed too just to rule that out as a potential problem.

Let us know how you get on. :)

Thank you for your fast replies. I have already renewed the ASPI layer and yes, the burner is a master on the IDE channel. I have not disabled XP's burning engine and will try that when I get home tonight.

My computer is/has been running Intel Application Accelerator therefore DMA is not a selectable tab for any hardware. I have checked in the IAA program itself and all is enabled and normal.

I have been wrestling with this issue for many weeks now, but have not made any progress. Very frustrating since all used to work without any problems and I don't know what changed. I am wondering whether doing an XP Repair/Install from the original CD will correct this while retaining all my installed programs.

If anyone else has any thoughts I am open to suggestions. I will post results if/when they occur. Thanks all!

Intel Application Accelerator creates issues with most packet writers (varying from data corruption to BSOD's at bootup), while it also doesn't behave too well with many burning applications. You'd better remove it, and use the native XP drivers.

about IAA: do like scarecrow suggested

and remember Adaptec's ASPI 4.7 variants are crap;
mainly recommended version is 4.6 build 1021 by using ForceASPI 1.7 as installer;

Last night, I reinstalled XP from the original CD. I am running XP Home and ran the install as an upgrade which kept all my existing programs. All burning issues went away. All media now working properly!

I would have liked to have found and understood the specific problem, but at least this has gotten me going again. I successfully burned all media that would not work previously.

My next step is to reinstall all the Microsoft "Critical Updates" and see if the problem comes back.
