Mastermind

Mastermind™
Version 1.0 beta (released 2003-03-11)
Master your media with Mastermind™ and enjoy your DivX® movie and MP3 music collection from anywhere you have an Internet connection. Listen to MP3s from your home computer at work, or watch videos from your house at a friend's apartment.

Overview of Mastermind™
Mastermind™ gives you the ability to access your entire music and movie collection from anywhere with an Internet connection. Install the Mastermind application on every computer where you store your media files, then use the Mastermind web client to see a combined and organized view of your media. Play back your media from anywhere, to anywhere.

Organize your music and movie files
It's not uncommon these days for people to build up sizable collections of music and movie files, and oftentimes those collections are scattered across multiple computers: work, bedroom, living room, home office. When you have more than 10,000 media files in your collection (believe us, it happens), it can become an enormous struggle to manage.

Most people manage this by creating complicated directory structures, and laboriously renaming media files. With Mastermind, you don't have to worry where a particular file is on your hard drive. It's right there in the Mastermind client, sorted by album, artist, track, or video.

Many computers, one media collection

But in the words of the great Don Pardo, that's not all. You don't even have to worry about what computer a particular file is stored on, because Mastermind gives you a unified view of your entire media collection, even files stored on remote computers. The Mastermind application reads information about your media from where they are stored on your different computers (while leaving the actual files in place), and displays your complete collection in a single organized web interface. It's so organized, in fact, that you'll probably rediscover media files you didn't even remember you owned.

Version 1.0 beta 3

released 2003-05-22

New:
Mastermind now supports AVI files that use *.divx and *.div file extensions.
Mastermind will now show media files whose ID3 tags are encoded in non-ASCII character sets like Latin-1 and Unicode. Previous beta versions of Mastermind would not display these files in the media collection. (There still exist some problems with files whose filenames are in Unicode characters. See the known issues list for more information.)
Fixed:
A bug that caused the message ""You were logged in successfully, but we were unable to retrieve any information about your account" to appear when users attempted to log into the web client. (This message may still appear in rare circumstances. Let us know if it still victimizes you.)
A bug that caused the message "Unable to create affiliate user as it already exists" to appear during the installation process. This would prevent the installation from successfully completing.
A bug that caused URLEncoded characters to appear in the filepath generated by the agent application when users attempted to play files to a remote computer. This would cause a message such as "The URL: C:%7CMusic%7CAudio%20File.mp3 can't be reached" to be shown.
Several bugs that interfered with playlist creation. These would cause Javascript errors to be displayed, or new playlists to appear empty and not include any of the tracks added to them.
A cosmetic GUI bug in the setup application that would appear if you added and removed large numbers of directories to your media collection.
A bug that would prevent thumbnails from being generated for certain video files. This bug could also interfere with other thumbnails in the video collection because all video files in the list after the one that caused the bug would also not have thumbnails.
A bug that would cause an "infinite loop" of password login dialogs to appear in rare circumstances.
Changed:
Mastermind now limits the number of tracks that may be added to a new playlist. This limit is currently set at 150 tracks. This limit was put in place because adding very large numbers of tracks to a new playlist was causes memory problems on the server which resulted in "page not found" errors when creating the playlist.
Improved:
The Mastermind installer is now a single installer application, rather than two related installer applications. This should streamline the process of installing and uninstalling the application.
The Mastermind web client login screen now includes a "Remember me" checkbox that allows users to save their login information so they don't have to login every time they use Mastermind.
The Mastermind interface now uses more descriptive "Unknown" strings. If Mastermind can't determine the artist or album of an audio file, it will now show "Unknown artist" or "Unknown album" in the interface. Previously, the interface would just say "Unknown" for both, which caused confusion.
The Mastermind agent application now uses less RAM and interacts better with other network-intensive applications.
The Mastermind setup application has an improved user interface that provides better feedback to users about the setup process and file synchronization.
The Mastermind agent application now allows you to optionally show or hide its status messages (e.g., "Mastermind agent is synchronizing your collection"). Status messages are now hidden by default, but can be shown by checking the "Show balloon messages in the system tray" checkbox on the Advanced tab in the agent application options.
The Mastermind FAQ was updated to include entries on slow video playback and adding and removing directories from the media collections.

Sux... hmmm, lets say it's quite immature yet, and quite buggy.
Here is a list of the well documented issues of it, although they are more:

This is a list of the known issues in the current version of the Mastermind™ media management service (version 1.0 beta 3). If an issue is on this list, there is no need to report it to us as a bug. We already know about it. Please note that just because an issue appears on this list, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be fixed in the next version. Fixes for known issues will be prioritized based on their severity and how many users they affect.
Known issues

* The Mastermind 1.0 beta 3 uninstaller will not remove all of its files. The Muse.exe, MuseMon.exe, VideoExtract.dll, and current log file will not be deleted until the machine is restarted. In addition, certain desktop shortcuts must be deleted manually.
* If you create a playlist of audio files, and then later remove those files from your Mastermind collection (by either deleting the files from your computer, or by removing their directory from your Mastermind collection), the playlist will still exist, but it will be empty.
* Media files whose filenames include Unicode characters will not be displayed in the Mastermind interface. A workaround is to rename the file to use a Latin-1 or ASCII filename. The file will then display in the interface. (Unicode characters in ID3 tags are supported, so for example you can have a file named Music.mp3 that has Chinese characters in its ID3 title tag, and these Chinese characters will be displayed properly in the Mastermind interface.)
* If Winamp is set as your default audio player, you will be unable to use it to play WMA audio files via Mastermind. This is a Winamp limitation, not a Mastermind limitation.
* The Mastermind agent application requires the Microsoft High Encryption Pack in order to function properly. This pack is installed automatically with Internet Explorer 5.01 and later, but if you are running an earlier version of that browser, you may need to install it manually.
* Mastermind relies on video codecs that are installed on the server computer to generate the video thumbnails and montages. If you don't have the proper video codec installed, an "Image Not Found" image will be displayed.
* If you playback a video that is stored locally while "This Computer" is selected in your Mastermind client, the DivX Player will create a duplicate copy of your video file in your designated Movies directory. If the local file is stored in the Movies directory, this will cause multiple copies of the same file to be stored in that directory. For large video files, this can rapidly use up disk space. This will be addressed in a future version of Mastermind, but the workaround for now is to explicitly choose your computer in the "Playback To" box in the lower left of the Mastermind interface. This will, in effect, attempt to playback your video to the "remote" computer, which is actually the local computer. When this is done, the Player is called in a different way, and does not create the duplicate copy.
* The "Tracks" tab in the Mastermind client, by default, attempts to list all of your music tracks, categorized by artist, beginning with the letter "A." If there are no artists that begin with the letter "A" in your collection, you will receive the message "Sorry, no results on your search." The workaround for now is to access your tracks through the Artists or Albums tab. If you do have an artist beginning with "A" in your collection, then you won't have any problem.
* When you playback a video using Mastermind, by default the DivX Player launches and attempts to download and play the video. If you are running the DivX Player for the first time, you may see a dialog prompting you to sign up for the DivX newsletter. If you fill out this form and press submit, the Player will submit the information, but will not continue downloading and playing the video from Mastermind. You will need to restart the playback. (Incidentally, if you dismiss the newsletter dialog without filling it out, the playback will continue normally.)
* While the DivX Player is downloading and buffering a video from Mastermind, if you begin playing back the video before it is fully downloaded, your playback position may "catch up" to the download position. If this happens, the DivX Player will pause the playback. Pressing the Play button after this pause has occurred will restart the playback from the beginning of the movie. You must manually seek back to the position where the pause occurred and resume playback from there.
* The Mastermind Agent will occasionally lose its connection to the server. If this happens, try disabling, and then re-enabling the Agent using the pop-up menu in the task tray. If that doesn't fix the problem, try closing the agent and then re-starting it.

If you have problems with the Mastermind Agent application (the application that appears in the task tray), send us the log file (to the technical support address shown in the right sidebar of this page) stored in your Mastermind installation directory. (The file will have a name like Log_YYYY_MM_DD.txt, where YYYY, MM, and DD are filled in with the current date.) The log file will help us debug any problems that appear during the beta period.
