Making Copy???

New to the dvd movie deal and was wondering? DVD9 is a double density disk and DVD5 a single disk?? If so does it say on an original disk what it is or how can you tell the difference?
Can dvd5 disk be copied like any other disk, from 1 dvd to a blank without removing files.
