VIPER_1069 is right, there's no copy protection on any windows installation cds. the primary reason for having copy protections isn't to prevent u from copying the disc, but rather to use as a check later on to verify that u own the disc, typically with games where u have to have the cd in the drive to start up the game. windows never requires a cd check to run the OS.

any problems u have copying aren't the result of copy protection. u can try using any of the programs VIPER_1069 listed to see if they have any success copying the cd.

I agree with VIPER_1069 Microshit OS CD's have no protection on them. I have seen disc that where copied wrong or scratched that couldn't be copied again. I've heard of people coping it in dos to the hard drive and then burning it from the HD. My dos is rusty so I couldn't help you with that. Hope that helps.

Win98 cd definitely not copy protected and yes you can install/re-install by copying files to hard drive and installing from there after booting in dos (in fact, according to the readme, it's the recommended method). :)

I don't remember the last time I talked to a tech and he knew what he was talking about!!! :D

The only protection on that cd is the registration process (serial key).Same goes for all Windows versions that I know of, serial &/or activation.

ALL Microsoft products, even MS-DOS are still "copyrighted", mate! But this does not have any relationship with copy protection- software copyrights don't scare any CD burner (quite luckily...). If you can't backup the CD then either it is very scratched, or you are doing something terribly wrong...

Indeed... copywrite and copy protection are not the same thing.

M$ wouldn't tell you the whole truth anyways. Did you really think that would tell you if and what copy protection it had on the disc?! They claim there is no reason to copy the disc for "backup" as they will replace your Windows install disc if damaged, so long as you can show proof of purchase when you send them the original disc. But if you have ever done this (like I have), you will know how much of a pain in the arse it is.

medic13... I would try another CDR copy protection other than Nero, before you conclude it is copy protection. Nero is a pretty good CDR soft, but certain builds are quite buggy. Try this link... it's free.
