Bayesian filtering - calculates the probabilities, and classifies according to what you specify.
Most commonly, you would set up a SPAM bucket, and a NON-SPAM bucket - you may try others, like a Newsletters one - you want solid, non-overlapping categories.
With a reasonable training set, it's said to be pretty good - though not the 100% certainty of well constructed filters.
with POACHER HERE i swear by MAILWASHER its free too you can read /delete and bounce back any junkmail you dont want before it even reaches your system it allows you to RAW read the text within the mail RIGHT on the server instead of risking it on your own it ignores images and fancy stuff and most importantly ATTACHMENTS are not downloaded and opened on your system so no fear of VIRUS infected systems as you can personally pick and choose ONLY the emails you wish to download and bounce back or delete the E-mails that you DO NOT want and then download ONLY the chosen mail
Yeah, Mailwasher without a doubt. If these prats send me the SH1t, I bounce it right back.
It takes a while but in the end it slows down what seems the never ending stream of drivel.
or you could see if your mail provider has an option for filters, then you can setup that spam goes straight to the trash bin.
also mailwasher is a good program if your mail provider does not provide filters.
