Lost History

HI,

I have had XP Pro for moths now and, suddenly, I have no history in explorer. The setting is twenty days but each time I log on and look at history it is empty. Any ideas, I'm stumped.

this could be cleaning the temp/history folders at startup/shutdown

Sorry, I don't know what MyIE is, I just use explorer 6 as supplied with XP

are you using McAfee anti virus by anychance !?

mcafee gave this solution to the bug where VirusScan 6 stops your Internet Explorer History file and Favorites from working.

it may or maynot be of use to you TKM1940

Open VirusScan console
Select "Pick a task..."
Select "Change my VirusScan settings"
Select "Configure VShield background scanning"
Select "Customise your VShield settings"

Select the "Internet Filter" icon from the icons down the left hand side On the "Detection" tab, in the 'Applet filters' section, remove the tick next to "ActiveX Controls".

Can't Find Favorites:

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View. Select Show hidden files and folders. Then go to C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Favorites. Right click/unhide.

Favorites and Users

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellFolders

Look in the right pane for the Favorites value. Note the full path to the Favorites folder.

This value should be a REG_SZ value type, not a REG_EXPAND_SZ type. If its the latter of the two, right click Favorites and select Delete. Then right click in the right pane and select New, String value and name it Favorites. Double click the new entry and enter the path to the Favorites folder (you should have noted it, above).

To Change the Location:

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders. In the right pane, right click Favorites/Modify/Change path. To verify: On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.

If you have TweakUI installed for Windows XP, go to My Computer/Special Folders/Folder/Favorites/Change Location

Job done!!

Unchecking the ActiveX Controls in Viruscan consule fixed the problem. I've never had a problem with Favourites so I only completed the first part and this worked.

no problem TKM1940 its amazing what you can find by asking google a simple question i asked it

internet history not saving in windows xp

the answer was on the second page of results Results 11 - 20 of about 25,000. Search took 0.23 seconds.

just curious but would you get the same results if you went to ie/tools/internet options/advanced/security and unchecked the Emtpy Temp Internet files folder when browser is closed?

I know it comes unchecked from the default setting, some app. that may not be installed anymore may have checked it and left it checked for you to figure out.
