Looking for for a new standalone player

My DVD standalone JVC has start to fail reading MP3 and SVCDs. I am changing it for a new DVD player.

What I like is something that gives me the oportunity to play:

Must be Zone Free
It must accept well PAL and NTSC titles
DVDs (off course)
VCDs (without problems on CDRW and CDR)
SVCDs (" " ")
MP3 recorded cds (" " ")
And if possible DiVX (I don't have so much hope for this last one)

I need coax sound digital out.

I like to have the oportunity to see on screen the names of the sounds on an MP3 disk (this was one of the things that I didn't like from my JVC, it played the disks but the OSD was very poor.

If I can get some quality player could be nice (I am litle dated on standalones, I now there is some things like overscan or something called "like" that that can give better image than the normal "economic entry level" product, but this is NOT entirely necesary.

I am in Norway so I need european SCART connectors or SVIDEO.

Any help GREATLY apreciated as always!

these are latest models of Sony which has no problems os reading cd-r's and cd-rw's the only negativity is SVCD. You cannot play them in normal circumstances unless you do little tricks..

hmm... I wouldn´t recommend any BRANDED DVD Player ... I don´t know how expensive they r in Norway ... but in Austria I saw a player for 130€ (Schneider) which would fit your needs + has got a build in DTS DECODER !! --> the best if u own a Pro Logic Amplifier !

the cheapest start @ 100€ (some time ago Sony NS DVP 300)
but as u mentioned ... it has got probs playing CD-r ... newer ones don´t have this prob ... I think ...

I am not worried for decoding capabilities, I own a Sony receiver that decodes DTS and Dolby Digital so the only thing that I need os the coax or optical stream output on the DVD. Can this Schneider play DiVX?

no..I don´t think that any DVD standalone player plays Divx ... maybe there r some out there ...but I´ve never seen one ;)

-->the player I mentioned has got an optical + caox digital out +5.1 chinch out

.... all of them have it (except 5.1 chinch)..cause most of them don´t have a build in DTS (AC3) decoder

Once Pioneer was really a pioneer in electronics maybe it's still bu not in home theater systems. Tle look, style and the quality of latest Pioneer products are dissatisfactory. In car stereo, they're still great. I guess Sony is great in Europea market.. If you still insist on Pioneer it has a model 444, it plays everything you can imagine (but Divx) of course. You can even play SVCD. But the overall quality of the stuss is sucks!!

I have been looking the w**.vcdhelp.com players database and as I am located in Norway there is a Grundig player that looks very good. The serie of 2 or 3 players from the Grundig Xenaro GDP (5100 and other models).
Seeing that not DiVX is avaliable yet, my primary focus is the compatibility and the good OSD capabilities. I like these Grundig ones because they accept long MP3 filenames on screen and good compatibility for SVCD and VBR Mp3. I have to check price still, but this is a good german mark.

the Grundig Xenaro is one of the best players out there ... I saw a test ... they said .. " The Grundig Xenaro is able to play nearly everything which looks like a disc ;) "
but I´m sure that it isn´t one of the cheapest ;)

Give a check here for all models and to see if there are any hacks.------h**p://www.vcdhelp.com/------

vcdhelp

Take compatability reports with a pinch of salt.
Some reports conflict and some are just plain wrong.
The reports are from visitors and not reviewers so be warned!;)
Otherwise this is an excellent site.:)

Yeap sad but true, even the supplied e-mails of reviewers are fake, and the working ones never turn back to you!!

That is why I prefer to read the manuals of the products before buying. Vcdhelp is the only place with a big database that I have found until now. In these moments is that I whished to live in England. There is so much easyer to buy there than here.
The truth is out there :)

for your convenience lins to the models i'm recommending

@thorz --> manuals of products aren´t the solution ...cause some of them r wrong ... like some sony manuals r ...

--> as daveml said VCDhelp isn´t much "help" cause many of this hardware reviews r wrong ... experienced it with Samsung DVD 909 ...

@ Armagan1 ..hmm... your sig means that u marry a girl which is a virgin ... hmm... that means that u didn´t f***** her ... haha ... sorry but that doesn´t sound very good ... --> not meant offensive ;)

You are right about manuals, but if specifications say that one can play SVCD, must probably can more that one that say only VCD for example.
I understand it about vcdhelp. And this is true because for example my actual JVC can play SVCD (ok it COULD) and in the site apears that it cannot. But since there are not so much databases like this one it can be a good starting point. The best would be to test the thing on the store with your own SVCDs and MP3. That is what I am gonna try to do if they sell the one that I like in town. If not then just buy it on an Internet shop that accept returns, and test it here at home.

And about Armagan1 signature, I think is an ironic joke elpresidente, Mary was the mother of Jesus and for the Catholics she is the Virgin Mary. I think we must read: I "am going to"---> Mary, a virgin girl :)
