Login password lost

I have windows 2000 Professional service pack 2 on my laptop
The admin password (which is the only login name and password allowed acess on the laptop) was changed and typed in wrong, no one knows what it is. Anyway to bypass the password or retreive it without downloading windows again?

retrieving the password is almost impossible because of ms syskey protection, but there are tools like cia commander which can be booted from floppy and reset the password.
cia commander is not freeware, cant remember any other name, perhaps someone else can give you a link

L0pht crack can also retrieve the password for you. If you wish just to reset the admin password, you can also use Winternals ERD Commander. None of the above programs is free.

l0phtcrack only works properly if you got admin access, perhaps without pw and want to get another pass.
getting a pass out of the SAM file would take ages because its enrypted with syskey in 2k and xp.
logging on as admin would disable syskey and allow to (more or less easy) retrieve the password
