Local SMTP server set-up help needed

Running on Wireless LAN (W2K SP 3) and having trouble sending e-mails with attachments.

My ISP suggested a Local SMTP server under IIS with Relay to Local Host. Outgoing mail server must then be localhost or 127.0.0.1

Also running ZA because it looks like it that if one is not careful, one might open up your system to the whole world.

Please direct me to a forum where I will be able to find set-up instructions if none is available on this forum. Did a search on SMTP and found none.

Thanxs in advance :)

If you meant IIS instead of ISS, then you go to add/remove programs, and select SMTP to install it (part of the Web/Ftp/SMTP IIS).

Many thxs meant IIS

Will check out Argosoft also because with W2K Pro it is indeed a SMTP light server according to the experts. Initially large mails became stuck and had to run machine overnight to clear Inetpub\mailroot\queue

Did the following in IIS SMTP to get it going:

General Tab: Entered IP address
Access Connection: IPs for all machines in local workgroup
Access Relay: IPs of local Host plus other in WG
Delivery: 1 min retry everywhere except notification AsIs
Delivery Advanced: Smarthost now ISP SMTP server
Messages: untick 1024 limit

CP | Mail service: Outgoing: IP of local machine and not ISP

Sometimes still sees mail sitting in Inetpub\mailroot\queue for quite a while. Looks like it that one must leave machine running?

How do U clear Inetpub\mailroot\queue ?

Ok in W2K
Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Internet Services Manager
SMTP Server right click for properties
General Tab | IP address (computer local network IP) | Advanced
Port 25 is mapped to computer IP
Also seem to have computer WAN IP mapped to Port 25 but
127.0.0.1 not available to select there

Access Tab | Relay | Localhost and other computers on LAN (Workgroup not a domain)

Can't seem to find the place where one can add local host in order to do port 25 mapping.

Downloaded Argosoft Mail Server and very tempted to use that rather. Just looks like another mission to set-up again.

argosoft server is good, don't use the MS smtp, it doesn't work properly. I wanted to send email using php, and always got an error. deactivated MS smtp, set argosoft mail server to port 25, tried again, and then it works. all over the net people complain that MS smtp doesn't work.
127.0.0.1 isn't there, because it's not a real address. what's your real address on the network? mine is 192.168.0.4, set by the router. router is 192.168.0.1, mine is --0.4. so basically 192.168.0.4=127.0.0.1=localhost on my computer.

sometimes you have to restart windows, if you deactivate/restart a server (IIS or smtp). I think it's zone alarm 3 fault, because it reserves ports and doesn't let them go till the next restart of the OS. so if it doesn't work, try telnet to the port:
telnet localhost 25
the header should say "Argosoft server" or something like that.
don't foget to deactivate MS smtp and restart the pc to free the port 25 before you activate argosoft

Thanxs php :)

U have convinced me!

The moment my backup puter is back from repairs I will uninstall SMTP from Control Panel to make 100% sure it is no longer there and go for the Argosoft option.

Maybe by next week this time some of my MS frustrations will be something of the past.

you don't need to uninstall it. simply run:

%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

and deactivate it in the services

my apologies. in my setup, mail is running on my server, where the local ip routes through the LAN's ip. behind the router, though, i would have mapped it to the private ip in that case (192.168.2.2 in my case). sorry for the confusion.

Whoops was just about ready to dive in when I discovered there are also:

SmartMail Server 2
MDaemon Pro 6.03

Looks like some more research coming my way

Mdaemon's up to 607 now, with options for faxmail, webmail and some others. i've been using mdaemon since version 1.x. you might want to give it a try.

mdaemon it is.

btw kugmo, what went wrong with yr previous avatar ? that one seemed dominating while this one looks confused (or goofed ?) !!!

bangla, the little kid is picking his nose. 'kugmo' means the sticky green stuff in my part of the rainforest.

Hm
Both MDaemon Pro & ArGoSoft Server earned 4 cows on Tucows
Seems U prefer MD which has a real impressive features list

How about the following 5 cows?
Mercur Mail Server 4.0.1
MailMax 4.8
WorkgroupMail Mail Server 6.5.2
Merak Mail Server 4.4.2

Mail Direct 1.6 (4 cows)

All I wannu do is to get my mail (with attachments) delivered ASAP over the Wireless network using Outlook 2K (because its syncs nicely with my PDA)

CNet & ZdNet was 2 slow 2 figure out what's good

Ok Downloaded both MDaemon and ArGoSoft Mail Server

MDaemon has very impressive features and 366 p manual

ArGoSoft less features and 94 p manual including 3 p How 2 guide

MDaemon a bit overwhelming and complicated for this oldie 50+

Going to give ArGoSoft a try first because my problem is sending mail with attachments over broadband wireless network the other fancy stuff seems tempting but most probably an overkill now.

My broadband Wireless provider went from bad to worse with the result that I am back on ISDN dail-up awaiting ADSL which will only be avialable to me in March 2003

The Mail server project on the back burner for the time being

Was quite impressed with ArgoSoft - Easy set-up and much more manageable than MS SMTP light
