Liteon 48246s CDR problem

Hi All

Sorry to start my time here with a question, but can anyone help me out with this?
I've had this drive for a while, so I don't think I can return it. I'd only ever used it for CD-RW's so never realised there was a problem, but it doesn't like CDR's. It will read normal CD's, and read and write to CD-RW's, but it won't read or write to CDR's. I've tried a few different makes too. Any ideas? I've tried updated the firmware, but it hasn't helped.
I can't
think of any other information that might be pertinent... I'm running Windows ME if that helps.
Thanks for any guidance anyone can give.

Oh yeah, that would be pertinent, wouldn't it?
It's the software that came with the drive. Ahead Nero 5 I think.
Do you have a theory?

Reads and writes CD-RW - is that with Nero, or with InCD.
InCD (the packet writer) cannot use CD-R media.

Any other CD-related software installed?

if you tried burning with Nero itself (and not with InCD Drag & Drop) nevertheless it could be a media problem; What media brands did you used?

Haven't got InCD on, so that's not it. It may be worth (and I should probably have already tried this) removing and re-installing Nero though. I'll try that today and see if it helps.
On the other hand, that'd be unlikely to affect whether it could read CDR's I suppose.
The brands I can remember having used are:
Vivistar
Lifetec
Sony

That's bizarre! - normally it's CD-R that burn ok and CD-RW that give trouble. If Nero itself is working satisfactorily with CD-RW media, not sure if that rules out things like ASPI issues.

Does it not accept that there is a CD there? Or does it start the process and then fail with an error.

Can you get it to show you the media info?

Which version of Nero? 5.5.10.50 has a bug - fixed in 5.5.10.54.

One possible binding factor (which could relate to that bug)....
Are all your CD-RW's 74 minute, and all your CD-R media 80 minute (650 and 700 Mb)?

It's version 5.5.9.13.
All the CDR's are 80 mins. Not sure about the CDRW's though, lets see if I can check...
Yes. It looks like you're right.
But if it's a Nero bug, why won't the drive read CDR's either? My DVD drive will read them fine.

So it won't read a pre-burned CD-R.
It begins to sound like a bad drive - though it may be worth trying in another machine - and even with no CD-R software loaded, it would work as a CD-ROM (which should include reading CD-R burns).

My DVD-ROM is a lot fussier than the writer ... at least, in any machine that has dual drives, the writer has always had a better read margin than the DVD-ROM, especially for CD-R.

Can't say if 5.5.9.13 is good or bad - I had some trouble with the Wav editor around the 5.5.9.x series, and ran with a "cut & shut" of two different versions - I'd rate 5.5.9.17, 5.5.10.42, and possibly 5.5.10.54 as good - and the 5.5.9.x were ok other than the Wav editor bug.
