firmware upgrades in most but not all improve de drive. Speed depends on you system size of file etc etc you are copyin, burnin bro.
Now if your on about changin de firmware to a different model then it would be rated @ dat models spec...but your warrenty would be void. Someting you do @ your own choice.

I have the Lite ON 32123S which is a 32 x 12 x 40 burner. The "s" version I believe can be upgraded a little, but the "w" version can be upgraded even more. I don't know the details, but if you go to

Let me put it this way:
You can firmpatch the 32x to a 40x, but the difference in speed would only be 20 seconds max (of overall burning). Not really worth it considering it may have a few adverse effects.
Also by firmpatching it to the 40x or 48 x, it will not give you their abilities to read & write data better.
