Lightweight repalcement for Nero?

Hi Guys.

I'm a pretty undemanding disk writer user, I really just need data backup and the ability to make music compilation CDs. I also find virtual CD s/w really useful, and have been playing with an old free copy of VirtualDrive.

I've been using Nero 5.5 (OEM), but my new multi-format DVD drive came with no software so now i'm looking for a s/w solution.

Nero 6 seems to have gone down the bloatware "everything but the kitchen sink" route, and has one of those cheesy kiddies Tonka-toy user interfaces :-}

Alcohol 120% looks to be a good solution for reading/virtual disk/backup.

So, what do you guys recommend as a good backup and audio CD authoring tool for DVD (data, all formats), and audio/data CDs?

Favourites, or horror "don't use this" stories, much appreciated.

Burnatonce is indeed the best free CD and DVD burner out there by far- but surely not a video authoring application. Actually I don't even consider Nero capable of doing an acceptable video authoring (blame it on the worthless Ligos video authoring plugin).
If by "authoring" you mean doing just premastering, then look no further.

I was getting a different, and odd effect. The download started OK after a couple of attempts, but then kept stalling at about 50% complete.

Today it seems to have worked OK though. So now I get to play ;-)
