Leon's Simple Audio Mastering Program

I was doubtful at first, but this rather ungainly beast can work audio magic, and the price is right (free).
The Thumbwheel control method is irritating, as it takes a lot of mouse dragging to put enough of some settings on, while others are so hairtrigger they need a very light touch (eg. slow release is only a hair above zero).

The Modules include:
1. Input master gain/reduction
2. Highpass filter (rumble)
3. Parametric Equalizer (3 bands)
4. Average Compressor
5. Peak Compressor
6. Peak Distortion Limiters (between major stages)
7. Normalize wave to 100% as final step (not adjustable)

I got an easy extra 10dB or so on a previously unprocessed recording using fairly light compression settings (all other options turned off).
According to their suggested settings, a low average compression from a low-ish threshold, and slow release to preserve dynimics while rasing average level, and then a stronger compression off the top with the second stage.

This isn't the BEST audio pre-mastering tool (and the lack of waveform display etc. is rather weak), but it's not bad for a freebie - you could save some compressor settings that would probably work well on any unprocessed recording.
