LAME Frontend?

I am bored so I am deciding to re-encode my mp3s....I really like lame since it seems to be the BEST encoder there is.....but I need a frontend for it so I don't have to do alot of command line typing...but I would also like it to have a normalizer....I tried messing with sonic foundrys batch encoder and I like it but it doesn't use lame....I also like the super quality job that EAC does....like I said tho I would also like to normalize them all at the same time.....so what would you guys suggest?

thanks

RazorLame is an excellent front-end for LAME. It has all the common command line switches for quality or you can always create your own.

Personaly, I use these command line switches:

Higher Quality (Slower): "--alt-preset extreme"
(bitrates 220-270 kbit/s, usually averages around 256kbps)

OR

Higher Quality (Slower): "--alt-preset standard"
(bitrates 180-220 kbit/s, usually averages around 192 kbps)

The file sizes are bigger, but the sound quality is nearly CD.

I have razorlame but there isn't an option for normalizing :-(

thanks for the quick reply tho
Does your ripper proggie not have one? What are you using? You can still normalize after extraction (something you have already done, yes?).

well these are mp3s downloaded from p2p or newsgroups...so I didn't rip them :-( and I agree EAC kicks butt! razorlame is good too I just wish there was an easy way to normalize and encode with lame all in one :-(

thanks tho

EAC works great to compress the wavs to mp3.....so I figure I will just use razorlame to uncompress the original mp3 and then use EAC to make the mp3s back....since I like how EAC makes mp3s

You can do this...but because mp3 is a "lossy" format, those bits that were lost when they were first encoded (from your peeps at the p2p network) won't magically reappear when you turn them into wave files. More than likely, you will just loose more bits after you reencode the files back to mp3.

If you want equal mp3 file playback volumes, I suggest a volume equalizer plug-in. What proggie do you use for mp3 playback?

This is called transencoding, it's a very, very bad idea. Most of your files will be substantially degraded by doing this.

MP3pro format isn't that great either. It's optimised for low-bitrate files. I would never use it for my personal collection.

LAME is excellent though, keep it handy for future encoding. Coupled up with EAC, it will produce brilliant results.

Try this site for an excellent freeware MP3 normaliser and cutter:

I think it's what you are after and then you don't need to re-encode MP3s and lose even more quality....

and as posted any new MP3s using EAC can be normalised with no problems!!

EAC and LAME kick butt!!

Cheers!

I know cooledit 2K & pro can also normalize mp3s (even adjust the bitrate for you). However it is a tool used more for complicated music procedures (& probably too big for the average user).

Not sure about 'normalize' as I've never gotten that to work right, but I know that Streambox Ripper will change the bitrates on mp3's. It will also allow you to convert ra to mp3.. :D

h**p://www.sonicspot.com/streamboxripper/streamboxripper.htm

I haven't used it in a while.. I have a crack for it somewhere, so if you can't find one lemme know..

I use WinLAME as the front end for the LAME encoder. Nicer interface than Razor and some good preset configurations.

It can also encode using the Ogg Vorbis Encoder which is an added bonus.
