Hi all, i have made a few posts here, and read a ton of tutorials, and learned alot, very excellent site.

Here is what i did. Originally i got a sony dru-510a. After using it a while, i was happy, but then i read about the firmware upgrades for the pioneer 106, so i went and exchanged the sony for one.

It works fine, and the first thing i did when i got it was update the firmware to 1.07. The thing still records, so i assume i didnt break it.

Anyways, with DVD-r media it will not go above 1x record with nero. The media is compUSA brand dvd-.

When i take the disc out it allows 4 or 2.4x speeds, as soon as a put a - in it chooses one.

Similarly, with some Fuji DVD+ media i have, it will only write at 2.4x.

Whats going on here? Any ideas? the main reason i switched to the pioneer is because i understood it is less picky with media, and would write - faster. Is this not the case?? TIA.

how fast does yours rip? I ask because i do not see much improvement over the sony in this department, where i expected alot after the firmware upgrade.

Or, is it possible the rip speed is limited by the compression its doing rather than the actual reading? I am ripping right from DVDShrink.

I use dvd decrypter to rip, dvd shrink if necessary.

also it depends on what kind of DVD's ur ripping, some rip at 4x speed some at 2x for me....

well 1 dvd approx take 20 minutes to rip, 30 minutes to shrink adn 30 to burn.
