java

Does anyone know why the m.s. site does not allow the downloading of the virtual machine (for xp) ?
I am currently downloading the Sun version, (following info I got from searching the forum)

Errm I can download M$ java vm...

2 ways to download it from M$...

1). Windows update site

2). h**p://w*w.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm

I tried it and it works...

I use suns java plugin but 1.40 seems so slow....guess I wait till 1.5 --> I knwo 1.4.1 is out but its a 8mb? file...and I stilling paying for online access on 56k line

The IBM Java 2 runtime 1.3 is usually reckoned to be pretty fast - based on the SUN J2SE 1.3, but optimized for Wintel.

Bit of a sod to get hold of, as you must register at the ibm site, and then locate the right download(s) - navigation is a pain!

It was the windows update site that I went on and there was no way it was letting me d/l. I wonder if its because its the corp vers of xp?
Yes I didnt know it was an 8mb file, till It finished 45mins later

I have just reinstalled XP and I found this too, M$ doesn't let downloads anymore of virtual machoine. So at the end, what is the best java virtual machine for insytalling on IE in XP? Some say IBM, others the SUn one... I need to install it now and don't like to install crap on my machine :(

I not problem with m$ updates when downloading - though I do have trouble with the site...sometimes the M$ update site cause titsup...just have to bear with it and try, try and try again....

IMHO I only go to the update site to see if I anything needs
updating, if I find I need stuff updating I go to the corporate site of M$ and download it...this way I have a backup of the file...

Normal M$ update site just updates the OS without you having a baqup...since I test lots of stuff I tend to break the OS often, so I need the backups....

If you need to find the corporate M$ site do a "search" above...
To lazy to find the bookmarks again ;)

if you download or install opera browser from a magazine coverdisk it comes complete with JAVA J.R.E. V1.3.1 sure its bout 11meg if you download it along with opera but you get opera browser with it too which is a pretty good browser anyhow :D i use opera more than IE as IE is pretty slow in comparison espesh on modem !!! :D

download opera here

h**p://w*w.opera.com/

making sure you download the one that includes java as there is 2 versions !!

noting that yer in the uk there "spottydog" check out pc utilities mag or pc essentials mag there both around £4.99 to buy but you usually get a load of good programs on the cd plus you get opera /netscape and ie current versions on the disks included so no long downloads ! and the magazines are a good read too !!! or see if you can lend one of someone with the disk !! :D

just a couple of ideas there mate :D

freejnr: Are you sure you are installing on XP? M$ has taken away the support for the automatic download of java for IE on XP. If you have it from before its not problem (I had it and it was ok), but I have reinstalled the OS and there came the prob, because there is not sign from java virtual machine on all the M$ website anymore. Try to find in Windows update, corporate and the original page of the Virtual machine.
Viper: I know Opera, quite a nice browser, I use to install it on slow machines sometimes. But if you have enough power then lots of content out there is made for IE, thats a sad reality. So if you don't have IE then you cannot see well some pages. I would like to install the VM from Microsoft. If anybody has the installer of the last VM avaliable for XP and can make it public it could be nice. I have it but for ME and that installer doesn't run on XP :(. I think somebody that had downloaded from the Windows update corporate site as a standalone download.

java sun is great. why not use it? it's much better than the microsoft virtual machine. I am currently using v. 1.4.1 and it's good, not problems with it

php: I have installed the last sun java, and I didn't like it. Everytime that you access a webpage with java it starts this console bull#¤% in the tray. I was playing with some settings and it was immposible to fix this behavor. I will prefer the Virtual Machine.
Almighty1: Thanks a lot man, now uninstalling SUN JAVA and installing the one you posted it. WOW! It looks that there was quite a number of folks that were needing this, 12 downloads in a short time!, Great!

why can't i install this vm ? (because of my beta service pack 3 ?)
"The Microsoft virtual machine you are attempting to install is a protected component and can only be updated with a later release of the operating system or service pack."
FortiTude

system: win2k sp3 rc3.140

:) Banned? who knows! But whatever, I don't think so... I have a new notebook also (apart from my desktop) that came with a clean install of XP english, tried to install also the java there and no luck, it says that VM is not more supported for automatically download. I really don't know, maybe you are just lucky my friend. Anyway I have installed the V;M from the link and working great now. Just as a note, there are lots that are having this problem, but it apears that you have something that lets you download the VM. Maybe some program installed? who knows. As I told you i am installing in a clean XP (just installed). I can download some java stuff for developers from M$ but I was only needing the VM browser plugin.

I do get the odd mag from time to time, at the moment PC Pro on a trial subscription, first 3 issues a 1p! and I usually get Micromart every 2 weeks But I must admit Ive never tried Opera (and didnt know it came with Java bundle)
(I quite liked Neoplanet.) :)
Cheers for the ideas tho :)
I only started this thread because when I went onto the main site chat room, it wouldnt work, said it needed java and it asked me if I wanted to install j.v.m. So not thinking( like you sometimes do  ) I said yes, which is when m$ said oh no your not.
Maybe its because I used `that` key I got kicked. But I since used DXKIM`S super tutorial about redoing the serial I have a `new` key :) So it may work again ?

If this (with authentication) takes you to Webspere preview technoloies, then you need

Runtime (18 Mb)

Not sure if U also need the installer

**** Trying to find the bypass entry I knew! - Bl**dy slow tonight!

That's where it sent Download Express to for the first one - guess I'd better try it out sometime!!!!

Anyone have a good way to bench the IBM (Java 2 1.3) against the equivalent or later SUN?

One report (on CNET) had it 20% faster than SUN's JRE of the same version.
