Plextor America has finally officially announced the PlexCombo 20/10/40-12A CD-RW/DVD-ROM. Here's a bit from the press release:
Plextor® Corp., a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance CD-related equipment and software, today announced the immediate release of the PlexCombo(TM) 20/10/40-12A optical disc drive. The internal drive delivers fast recording performance with 20X CD-Recording and 10X CD-Rewriting, along with industry-leading playback speeds of 40X-max CD-ROM and 12X-max DVD-ROM.
With four different functions in one drive, the versatile PlexCombo 20/10/40-12A offers customers cost savings and easier installation compared with purchasing and setting up two separate drives. Available in a standard half-height size, the combination drive requires a standard desktop computer drive bay and can be installed either vertically or horizontally. The Enhanced-IDE (ATAPI) interface ensures compatibility with a wide range of systems.
``The new PlexCombo drive provides Plextor customers with a sound investment and an effortless transition from CD to DVD technology,'' said Howard Wing, vice president of sales and marketing for Plextor. ``We expect this drive will be used for many personal and business applications, including storing and sharing multimedia files and presentations, Web pages, and digital images, as well as enjoying the more than 5,000 DVD video titles available today.''
The new PlexCombo drive extends Plextor's technology for high-quality, error-free recording. Plextor's sophisticated media-writing strategy, PoweRec-II(TM), guarantees recording results across a broad base of certified media by calibrating the drive to each media disc to ensure the highest quality write operation using Zone-CLV servo positioning. BURN-Proof(TM) technology prevents buffer underrun errors, so users can multi-task by sending email or surfing the Web while recording a high-quality CD.
The PlexCombo includes several other features designed to increase recording quality, including a black CD-holder tray that reduces C1 error rates. Optimized PCB circuits near the power supply decrease noise and provide clean power to the drive, improving both jitter and deviation levels. Self-diagnostics are offered as a new feature to allow users to determine if a problem experienced is drive related or not.
Most of you heard about these features when Plextor Europe announced the drive. However, the big question in many of your minds was when it will be available and more importantly, how much. Plextor's new combo drive should be available some time in mid-April and will run you about $229
