because i have tried and seemingly both nero and recordnow dx both say it is incompatible.... well is it? btw yes i mean vcd, just like copyin them 2 a regular cd-r but to dvd-r(w)

You need to author it as a DVD not a VCD, that is unless your player supports RAW mpg's in which case you could just extract and burn them.

Yes, as celtic said, you must author as a DVD. Just don't reencode the video. The DVD standard allows for true VCD-compliant files as an option. Not SVCD, though. The Gateway home DVD recorder will actually do this for you in LP mode to a DVD-R/W...

Not exactly VCD compliant, the audio needs to be 48KHz, but yes DVD specs do support VCD res MPEG1. Doesn't mean that the results will be as compatible as full res MPEG2 though.

ok i dont really care that much about quality. so i should use vcd2dvd and author them as dvd instead vcd. so i use the same process cept go dvd instead. also how many 400-450mb videos could i fit on 1 dvd disc(4.7gb) do dvds take up more space i mean :) thanks for all the help this is the best forum ever!!

ok im trying 2 use dvdlab 2 do it but its telling me ive got mpeg 1 and i NEED mpeg-2. how do u change my mpeg-1 to 2?

You need to use an MPEG2 encoder such as TMPGEnc or CCE, this will most likely require an increase in size.

What DVD Lab should say is that DVD was designed to primarily use MPEG2 files, but that it supports MPEG1 partially, but it can't preview them. It should then also tell you that the audio needs resampling from 44.1KHz to 48KHz.

You may want to resample and convert the audio to AC3 seperatly though. If you went from 224k mp2 to 192k AC3 you could actually save a little bit of space.

DVDLab will accept std VCD MPEG1 files. If it is not, then there is a problem at the start. How were the MPEG1 files made in the first place? They must be standard 352x240/288 MPEG1 files.

As a VCD MPEG1 takes up 10meg per minute of movie, then you be able to fit about 420 min of VCD per DVDR leaving some room for DVD authoring overheads. As C_D siad, converting the MP2 @ 244 to an AC3 @ 192 bitrate file will also save more room on the DVDR to fit even more on.
