Is it DVD to hard drive.

Hi all,
I have just ventured into the world of DVD copying and what might be an obvious solution staring me in the face, I thought I better check first.
To be able to make a copy from a DVD, do I copy the whole disc to the hard drive first, then record it back onto a blank disc after. It seems a lot of space is need on the hard drive to be able to do it this way.
The other thing is, which is the best format to use, so that the disc will play on my home DVD player. Is it “dash R or + R”.

Please can you help me? Regards, Bobby.

Commercial DVD's are CSS encrypted and that needs to be ripped out first before you can burn it. So yes, you need to rip to your HD first. If you think 4.3 gb is big, then I'd suggest you consider a HD upgrade. DVD copying is more than just plugging in a burner and hope for the best.

Go off to your local Sunday market and have a chat to one of the "pirates" there selling movies, they sell to everyone with all different DVD Players. I've yet to see one that does not use -R media.

Chickenman, are those markets just the local generic markets or are they computer markets? Here in NSW I have never seen pirated movies for sale at the pc fairs or the local markets. I assumed they were policed too vigorously to appear so blatantly in public view. I thought you could only get them abroad ...

Here at the Melbourne computer Sunday markets they are alive and kicking. I saw 4 sellers (I'm sure there are more) at yesterdays markets, had a chat to one of them. They may not always be in total view though. They are not particularly cheap either (not like those from Bali), I was only interested in how they "made" them and the media they use and why.

Sorry to get off track of the original thread - but just curious what info you gleaned from the sellers about their discs CM?

I dont wish to say much as I dont want it to appear that I promote or agree with what they are doing, which I dont. But some are pressed commercial dvd's made in China/Hong Kong/Malaysia/etc with high glossy front covers. One had a movie playing for viewing, quality was pretty poor. Those that burn them, tend to use either Princo (because they are the cheapest media they can buy) while others tend to use Ritek for reliabilty. But as I indicated earlier, they all used -R media and I guy said its very rare to get any returns due to not being able to be played (could also be that these guys are difficult to find to actually return it to :D).
