is divx quality really much better then plain mpeg?

from my trial and errors over the last few days i have encoded several dvds and found that divx has much pooer quality then a plain mpeg using mostly tpmg and vidomi am i doing something wrong coz i am yet to see the great quality divx can produce

Well it depends what you mean by quality, I mean there is the quality that it is capable of at extreamly high bitrates, in which case I guess MPEG2 would be the winner. Then there is the quality at low bitrates when DivX should win.

Try encoding with DivX at 352x288/240 and a bitrate of 1150 and compare it to a VCD, the DivX should look better and it is quite likely that the codec couldn't even achieve the bitrate in which case you could increase the resolution.

Once again though, here you go starting a new thread on topics covered by your old threads.

The idea is you start a thread asking a question, someone replies, you give feedback on their reply, etc. Rather than you starting a thread, someone replying, you ignoring the reply and starting a new thread.

@Badboy2002,Celtic_druid has done a nice job of trying to help you.I see about 8 or 9 similar threads.You don't bite the hand that feeds you.;)

If you have more questions just use the threads you have already started.We are here to help,but it does get confusing when there are so many similar threads going.

MPG Vs AVI (and the winner is MPEG2)

1-. the DIVX or XVID Vs MPEG 1
the DIVX or XVID is the better, but the MPEG1 have a little better birate

AVI is 1228800 Vs MPG 1411200

the MPG have a 14.84375 % more bitrate,
but with this the MPEG (1) is worse

2-. now DIVX or XVID Vs MPEG2

+/- same bitrate is same quality (some to say that less quality)

whit same bitrate, (MPEG2 + 14.84375%) the extra bitrate of MPEG2 in CD (no in DVD).
the only problem is the MPEG hace a keyframe every 15 frames, in comparison whit 10 seconds (300 o 250 frames in the DIVx)

clearing the "unlimited" keyframe in DIVX and XVID. (MPEG2 can down keyframe ratio), but MPEG2 continuous whit a very extra bitrate in this case

only change GAP in MPEG2 in the TMGenc or bbMPEG it turns the MPEG in the best compressor or the better to build in a CD-R (burn it a SVCD or SVCD non standard)

AVI = 1150 Kbps
MPG = 1150 Kbps
MPG = 1320,703125 Kbps

AVI = 80 minutes
MPG = 91 minutes 52 second 37 frames
MPG = 80 minutes

toast this in CD-R. in CBR format

good, but no compar4e MPEG2 whit AVIs
is only a Mpegable AVI, and not used the real capacity of a CD-R disk
