"invaild file format" problem

Ill try to keep this short......but beware, I am a newbie..lol...I used my athlon 2600xp system w/a pioneer 105 (F.W. 1.33) to back up 3 movies flawlessy ripping with both smartripper 2.41 and dvddecrypter 3.1.6....then burning it as dvd data with ezcd5 plat (I know....u guys dont like that prog) on DVD-Pro Certified 4x media (trying it first of course with a blank dvd-rw @ 2x). I didnt use nero because I couldnt find a way to put the .vob files in the VIDEO_VTS folder they needed to be in. Nero wouldnt let me create or drag that folder..only add the files to the project which I know wouldnt work. But I digress.....After 3 flawless backups, now I receive "invalid file format" error messages when I attempt to play the burned backup on my pc, and my dvd player in my living room shuts down all together when the disk is put in. I can play the movie just fine in file format from the images created on the hard drive after its ripped, but not when I burned those same files to a disk....and the files match exactly and are both in the VIDEO_VTS folder? Any suggestions? Also, does the disk have to be "finalized"? Or is finalizing the session good enough? EZCD wont let le close or finalize the disk unless there is over 4gb on it. ANy help is appreciated.......thnx for reading and helping,

confused and coaster poor

To burn a DVD with Nero, do NOT use "DVD-Video" - use the last option, UDF/ISO, and manually create the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders (both). Put your VOBs and IFOs in the video folder. Burn (should be finalized always for DVDs). If that does not work, you may need to use IFOEdit to fix VTS sectors on the IFO before burning...

I dont see the "UDF/ISO" option you are referring to. i am using nero 5.5.9.2. which opens up Nero express when I click on it. Theonly options I have are Data ((data and bootable), Music (mp3 or wma), dvd video, copy entire disc, and disc image or saved project.

OK....I got rid of nero express (5.5.9.2) and went back to an earlier version I had (5.5.7.2) and found the udf/iso option you suggested. I chose that and have tried writing twice now, once with the set at 1.02 and once at 1.5 and have had the same results. Is there some other setting I need to make sure to set? Thnx again

Just one of my typos...lol...I have both audio_ts and video_ts folders. What is IFO editor? What confuses me is theimage made plays fine when played fromt he hard drive, so it must have been ripped correctly. I, for some reason, am having trouble getting it burned correctly. Now I am getting "disc with unsupported format in drive E" errors.

Remember, both audio_ts and video_ts folders must be in CAPS --> VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. It makes a difference. Many players will not play without both folders, and not in lower-case letters.

Also, if you have issues with Nero, try Burnatonce version.98 - make a DVD Video and add the files to the VIDEO_TS folder.

Well i did'nt have any problems creating dvds with nero and useing the dvd-video option. But then i had a later version of nero then 5.5.9.2 May i surgest that you get the latest nero (6.0.0.9) and try again. Works great for me on my P4 2.6 with HT and an nec1300a :)

OK...now Im really confused. I downloaded and used Burnatonce to burn the last 2 disks with the same result..........I can now run the movie from the disc...in file mode only by clicking on the first .VOB file in windows explorer........if I try to fire up my pc dvd player, I get the unknown file format error again, and it shuts down my stand alone dvd payer as the others did. AM I leaving certain files out that need to be on the disk? I ripped what smartripper suggested (VTS_13_1.VOB through VTS_13_4.VOB) but did not put the VTS_13_0.VOB OR VTS_13_0.BUP AND VTS_13_0.IFO on the disk (I had before, but didnt have any lick when they were included). Here is the log from the burnatonce recording session in case anyone can see something wrong.

The only thing I have found that I dont like about Burnatonce is I cant try my project on a dvd-rw first due to 4X being the slowest burning speed I can select, and my Pioneer 105(F.W. 133) will only rewrite @ 2X. BTW, I have coasters for sale cheap if anyone is interested...lol

Well, I thought I had it figured out. AFter several bad attempts with nero and burnatonce using only the files that smartripper wanted to extract (vts_13_1.vob through vts_13_3.vob and the .ifo and .bup for the same #) I decided to add the vts file that smartripper hadnt selected (vts_13_0.vob)....but that didnt work either. Then I added the 3 video_ts files (.vob .ifo .bup) and it worked. Kewl beans right? Nope.....lol..the next disc I did using the same guideline hung where the menu should display and wouldnt play. Hitting the "select or play" button (thinking the selection defaulted to "play movie") trying to start the movie only restarted the disc to hang and not display teh menu again. I played it in file mode on my pc by clicking the vts_13_1.vob file........could the vts_13_0.vob file not ripped right causing the hang? Once again, as Bartles and James would say.."Thank you for your support".

Well, I found a solution, although not the on e I was looking for...lol...I would have liked to have figured out exactly what was taking place with the files, but I didnt. I followed a suggestion from another thread and downloaded dvdshrink and used it. It worked excellent! The only problem is that it is so easy to use, I still dont know what was causing my problem....lol. Since you just tell it what you want to keep with dvdshrink, I still dont know what is going on with the specific files, but at least this way I have an alternative that works while Im learning. Thanks to all who helped

Glad you got it working!Dvdshrink is a good program. We all come across problem backups from time to time.Different software can sometimes make the difference. :)

You just simply CANNOT copy the movie VOB files off a DVD and burn to a DVDR and expect it to play. The *.IFO, the *.BUP and the VTS_xx.0.VOB MUST also be present. Even with ALL files present it still will not play, you need to generate new VOB files with IFOEdit. This can be all to much for the newbie initially and suggest you stay with your DVD Shrink solution.

I finally figured out all those files had to be present. What keeps the .VOB files you rip from the original from working, and what does IFOedit do to them to allow them to work?

Ah..just reread the thread. All files were not present. ;)

Ifoedit corrects the file structure of your dvd so it will play from your backup disc.I agree with Chickenman, stay with Dvdshrink it simplifies things. ;)
