Internet Explorer

Just recently i was forced to reinstall windows (98), once i reinstalled it everything appeared to be fine until i tried to connect to the internet. It dialed up and connected, but once it accepted my user name and password i was unable to recieve any data at all. I am able to send information (or at least the two little screens on my toolbar say i am), but nothing ever comes back and eventually internet explorer will perform an illegal operation. Any ideas what to do?

well take chickenman's advice and try either getting IE6 or a service pack for your current IE version (I'm guessing its IE5, been too long since i last used Win98SE)

- - -

If that doesnt solve it . . . .

What ISP are you using? Well if its anything like AOL, the dial on demand thingy might be screwed - then it might need a reinstall of your ISPs provided software

If that's not the case . . . .

then . . . post again . . . and we'll see from there

well i guess thats *ONE of the other options (above)

did you happen to install the 128bit encryption update for the windows dialer proggy?

like pokopiko said - it could be a matter of reinstalling modem drivers or make sure you got IP binded to the dialup adaptor in networking properies or the ISP dialupadaptor.

But this is just speculation so far

Thanks for all the replies
I don't think that a new version of IE will work because both netscape and Outlook do the same thing. I have also uninstalled all my network and telephony drivers, but nothing changed. I'm connected through my college, and there is no software required. All my settings are correct, according to the steps i was given when i set up my internet account. I was able to connect to the same service before I screwed my computer up and was forced to reinstall windows. Also, if it helps, i had to reinstall windows because i switched my kernel32.dll with someone elses, and it wouldn't recognize the correct kernel32 file when i replaced the "bad" one w/ my backup. Once again, thanks for the responses.

I have always found if IE does not work properly, then Netscape will not also, I assume they use some common files.

Failing that the simple solution is FORMAT C: /q and start agian.

this may sound silly, but did u try and let ie fix itself. add/remove
hardware. after all u have tried, it can't hurt.

Clark031,

If you still want to try Internet Explorer with Win98 or Win98SE, download and use IE 5.5

However, do not use IE 6.0 with Win98. IE 6 is optimized for WinXP and will cause you lots of problems in Win98.

When I first installed Win98, I had problems in IE (many of the same you mentioned). But once I downloaded and installed IE 5.5, the problems went away.

I'm already using version 5.50, would it be worth the trouble if i was to upgrade to a more recent version of 5.5? Also, if i can't get this fixed and i have to start over, it seems to me that ghost2002 is the best backup tool. If i use ghost will i have to reinstall all of my programs again? Or when i activate my backup will all of the programs already be installed? Thanks!

Yes, Ghost is an excellent program for creating a backup. If used properly, it will restore you system and you will not need to reinstall all your programs. However, it will return your system to your current dilemma with IE all messed up. So this is not a good option for you currently.

I'm still not convinced that its just IE that's messing you up though. I think your best solution is backup any important data,
completely reformat your drive, and reinstall Win98.

BTW, when you were forced to reinstall Win98 was it clean?
If you do reinstall Win98, I suggest a LLF (low level format) of
your hard drive first. The reason why (if you didn't know) is that on a standard reformat your old data is still on the drive in one form or another. Windows reformat only overwrites part of the file so that it is not seen. Normally this is not a problem, but ocassionally Windows will see this old data causing you problems in Windows. The best LLF program to use is the one that came with the drive. If you don't have it, check out your drive manufacturer on the Net.

I too thought that using ghost would put me right back where i started, but i didn't know if it had the ability to "completely" backup programs of my choice, like an individual game.

Also, what do you mean by was my reinstallation of win98 clean?

Yeah, I've had to do a LLF on my drive in the past, what a waste of a day, and I've always suspected that that's what i was going to have to do, I've just been putting it off as long as i can.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help. At least now after I erase it all I'll feel confident that there was nothing else to do. Thanks!

No, it just makes an image of your current drive. It saves you all the time of reinstalling your OS, programs, and games. However, once you reinstall and get Win98 stable again, then do an image with Ghost 2002 and you won't have to go through this again.
;)

A clean install is an install in which you repartition, reformat the drive and install Windows (or other OS) "clean".

Yeah, I've had to do a LLF on my drive in the past, what a waste of a day
Yeah I know its a pain, but it often solves install problems. It's an old trick I learned when I was a tech support technician. It also doesn't hurt to do a thorough scan disc just to make sure that your problem isn't related to any bad sectors.

Good luck! :)
