Instant Copy Help Plz

Damn, I feel like a newbie all over again with all these DVD related questions. :D

OK, here's my weird situation. Last night I copied the film Windtalkers using Pinnacle Instant Copy 7. I followed Baldrick's (VCDHelp.com) tutorial, used DVD Decrypter in file mode etc, etc. I kept most of the extras but lowered the quality to apox 50%. I only kept the English sound and deselected ALL subtitles.

OK, so now it transcodes in IC7. Get's to the end then I burn the .PDI image using IC7 also. Here are the strange problems I'm getting:-

1) The film just cannot be played using a LiteOn 166S & Win DVD 4.5 yet plays back fine on Win DVD & Pioneer A05.

2) Even though I did not select any subs they are on throughout the whole damn film and my DVD Player gives me no option to turn them off.

3) If I access the main film from chapter selection then for most of the time the subs do not show! But sometimes (in random locations I think) they start showing up again.

4) All the extras show the subs and the quality is quite glitchy.

Can anyone help with this?

TIA :)

I have only used IC7 as follows, with success:

1. Rip with SmartRipper, selecting ALL in file mode (so I don't screw up with IFOEdit in recalculating, plus it keeps all stuff.

2. Use IC7 to create the .PDI files.

3. Convert the PDI files to ISO with pdi2iso.exe

4. Burn with Nero 5.5.9.17 (or newest version 10b).

5. Works in my Daewoo and Apex and PC.

... Laz, did you verify it would preview in IFOEdit after recalculating VTS Sectors? (I realize that you would have to mount the ISO in Daemon tools since you burned the PDI directly)...

I just use file mode and rip the whole thing.
I have subs deselected as standard and only keep English Audio.
Usually just the 6 channel ac3.
I burn with instant copy and have no problems, no subs and no glitches.
I get that sub problem with dvdxcopy sometimes, which is one reason i dumped it.
I also have had some dvd-r discs that the liteon could not see, but that would play and record fine in the pioneer.

BTW if you half the quality of any video file it is always going to look glitchy. (the extras maybe ntsc as well)
Better to remove them completely.

Thx for your help guys. ;)

Dave, I used the same settings as you exactly.

I'll try another film with this on the weekend without copying the extras and see what happens.

@ ipdave

No I did not mount in Daemon to view first, maybe I should have taken the extra time out to do that. But when the DVD played back in my A05 I did not seem to get the subs problem and the picture looked OK, it was just on the DVD player.

I switched from WinDVD Platinum to PowerDVD

By the way, I had problems with my WinDVD and when switched to PowerDVD everything worked well. I uninstalled WinDVD and am very happy with PowerDVD. Maybe WinDVD gives you these problems?
I burned many with IC7 and mostly DVDDecrypter File mode, and then got rid of most extras etc.
I normally try to maximize the video quality as much as I can - dropping extras if I need to.
Never had problems.
I have the A05 for burning and LiteOn 163D for playing. Both are playing well after burn. I use Ritek G03 discs.

Good luck

IMHO, Instant Copy is not perfect ( good effort though) and gets less perfect the more difficult the task you ask it to perform.

By stripping title sets I think you can create problems.

Try it without stripping anything, but increase the final size using f5, then strip later after it has finished and you have verified the copy is working correctly using dvd play in ifoedit.

All the above is one of the reasons I stick to CCE encodes. Quality is superb everytime and really doesnt take that much longer. I have done a "few" and still waiting for my first coaster, I'm sure you guys have a good collection of them by now.

Not one m8 either, I've done over 60 discs with DVD2one and all are perfect apart from 1 which was a long film and has slight sync problems in a couple of places.

The only problems I've really had with IC 7 have been with subs all the way through extras and poping up in the film on one disc, not really a coaster though I do personally feel that Pinnacle should never have released IC 7 in it's current state. A video editing software specialist such as Pinnacle really should do better, going by a post at the Doom 9 forums though a large bugfix download should be out this week sometime.

I must be one of DVD2one's biggest fans, I think the prog is fantastic for what it does so well.

Hmm.. I would call that a coaster myself, even if you didnt burn it out. Maybe I should have said "bad encodes".

Daveml, so how many bad encodes have those 3 programs produced for you that you didnt actually burn to disk but had to re-encode with another program? I know it wasnt zero.

DVD2One is great and would be exactly what I'm after from the 3 programs if the encoding was substantially better quality. Unfortunately it works on some but not on most DVD's. I need no menus or extras that take up room and bitrate. The Extras will always lower the quality of the movie by including them. I buy a DVD to watch the movie, not the extras.

I have yet to have a bad encode with dvd95copy.
When i was testing dvd2one i found that movies over 2 hours or so started to be noticably poorer than the same film using CCE.
So now I use dvd2svcd for longer films unless the extras are specifically wanted.
You obviously dont like these new all in one programs, but many people do.
Not everyone is an "expert" with dvd2svcd and other CCE gui (very few people could afford a legit copy of CCE) and the other programs can get them started in the dvd game.
Some people just want the speed of dvd2one, while some want the extras.
We will let people make up their own minds which is the best for them.
Like all software it is a matter of personal choice.

Credit where it is due...

Just to say I produced a film with IC 7 yesterday that I'm very happy with.

After trying a long film with DVD2one (Cinema Paradiso) and noticing the pic quality suffer slightly I tried LotR on IC 7 and am quite pleased with the end result. No extras as it's a 2 disc jobby so no subs on extras problem! :p

Out of interest whilst the subject of CCE has come up, I notice over at the Doom 9 forums there seems to be a couple of shell type add-on's to simplify the use of CCE. Anybody tried these?

IC7 is a remarkable product, but it STILL has some issues, one of them being the subs- Laz was right to complain about it. But unlike the VOB era, where bugs were fixed at snail pace, Pinnacle does some serious AND fast bugfixing, and this is quite an impovement.

Couldnt agree more and just because a lot of people like them doesnt mean I have to also. As I have said a 100 times before, quality is my main criteria and the speed of an encode is almost irrelevant to me. I'm sure this is the reverse for many and for others its somewhere in between. Each to their own.

DVD2ONE for example, has bought DVD ripping to a substantially greater number of people that have older or slower computers that have not been able to do anything an the past. Now they can.

I can't believe the last post on here was from 3-11-03. WOW!!! Back in the days when doing svcd and vcd I had to check hourly for the new posts. Hahaha.

I have been having the same prob with the subs with DXC. The sub will be on there and I CAN turn it off but kinda annoying. I am doing the whole copy on two discs. I am now just learning that I don't really want all the extra's as not only are the costs of discs eating me alive but the cost of cd cases. I DO want the menu and the movie. That is it. I would love for this to all fit on one disc. I am looking into other aves. such as Pinnacle. I believe from what I am understanding from the 1000's (that I have searched through. I'm not getting blasted for not using the search button) of posts on here and other forums will do and DVD2ONE will not do. Quality is of the upmost importance to me as if it were not than I can copy vhs tapes easily. I need/want the menu because my older standalone (Pioneer dvd 414, like one of the first) can't fast forward without stopping play.

The CCE method I have read, but the way I understood it (this is from memory) that it sounded like it was not producing dolby digital.

Can someone help (and where incorrect) with my dilemma?

Sorry for the long post here, but I read and read and read and then post some huge story, because I have saved everything that I wanted to state/ask.

Whew! Done.
