Inconsistent DVD Burning

Hi, I am new to this forum so please forgive if this question has been addressed before. I looked but could not find.

My Specs: Sony DRU-510A, P4-3.0Ghz, 512MB

I am using Memorex DVD+R and +RW 4x media

After ripping and shrinking and all that:
I first burn my DVD movie to a RW to make sure it works. I view test it in my XBOX because sometimes I can watch a burned DVD on my PC but not on my XBOX.

So I burn a movie to RW, it works in the XBOX, so I go back and burn to a +R and after it is done burning my computer won't even recognize it as a disk. It thinks it's a grilled chesse sandwich or something. If I try to open the disk with explorer or watch it using PowerDVD, that program will freeze as if it's trying to figure out what the disk is, but it never stops trying to figure it out. Even if I right click on the DVD Drive icon in the My Computer window, it will freeze as if it's waiting for the PC to recognize the disk. I'll have to end task it. And, of course, no DVD player will recognize it either. This happens with +RWs and +Rs in an inconsistent manner. I can't predict when it will work and when it won't.

I have used both Nero and Record Now DX to burn and get the same inconsistent results. One of three things will happen, either (1) I can view the movie on PC and XBOX, (2) I can view it on my PC but not my XBOX, or (3) the disk is not recognized at all by anything.

Intersting thing I noticed when using Nero ... it seemed like my bunrned disks would work just fine when, after completing the burn and ejecting the disk, my DVD+RW drive would die. I wouldn't be able to close it ... it's like there is no power running to the drive anymore so I would have to reboot to get the tray to close. But whenever this happens, the burned DVDs work fine and are viewable in my XBOX. However, if I burn a DVD and the drive is still "alive" after ejecting the disk, the disk will be unreconizeable by my PC or any DVD player.

I'm getting frustrated. Why must it mock me so? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any advice.

The first thing I would try is a different brand of media. You might also try rebooting your computer just prior to burning the dvd, & reducing the burn speed slightly. Also check for any firmware updates, as this may help your burner`s compatibility with certain brands of media.

Thanks, Dano Roo. I'll try out some different media and see what happens. Could you recommend a certain brand that you've had success with? Thanks a lot!

Also, I hear that DVD+R is better for video quatlity that DVD-R. Is that true? Is it really that noticeable? Thanks for all the help.

Welcome to the forum.

There is absolutely no substance in your question of "is dvd+r better for video quality then dvd-r". Video quality wise there is ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE to what dvdr its burnt to, the only differance can be if your player can read the disk better than another. From my personal experiance DVD-R's have a greater chance of playing on a DVD player than the +R's though.

If you also do a search on the forum for MEMOREX, you will find just about everyone using that media is having the same or similar problems that your having. Change your media and Ritek -R's are excellent and priced right at well.

Thanks for the reply, ChickenMan. I guess was was steered wrong by someone who wanted me to buy thier more expensive +Rs. I *thought* that sounded a little fishy. Thanks for clearing that up.

I`m not familar with your burner Fish Sauce, but before you buy dvd-r media, be sure that it`s compatible with your Sony burner. When I say compatible, I`m referring to the format, not the brand. If you have already had intermittant success with +r then I would stay with +r but try another brand other than memorex. Good luck.

Thanks, Dano Roo. You have been extremely helpful. Take care.

As ChickenMan says .... give the Memorex disks a miss and go for Riteks.
IMO they are the best value and most reliable/compatible.

Also agree that -r's are more compatible
