Inactive Partition

I have the following setup with Windows ME. I'm using RAID 0 (C:)utilizing primary ide 3 and primary ide 4 of my KR7 motherboard. I have another drive on ide primary ide 1 (D:). The system boots from the RAID controller. The drive on ide 1 has the primary partition set to active, but has no operating system on it. I want to add another larger capacity drive to primary ide 1 and place the previous drive on primary ide 2. My question is...

Can I use Partiton Magic to make the primary partition of the original disk on ide 1 to inactive before moving it to primary ide 2.

I'm hoping I can do this without losing any data and pave the way, to making primary partition on new drive active.

I don't want to hide any drives or partitions.

Thanks in advance,

nulke

First create a startup disk. Then install all your drives. Reboot the computer from the startup disk and use fdisk to verify and make your partition inactive.

You run the risk of losing all your data by changing the partition status- actually it's much more dangerous that changing/converting the type. Also have in mind that Windows always want to put the loader at the first harddisk MBR.

Thanks for all replies. I have decided to place the newer disk on primary ide 2. I'm going to install xp on the new disk and allow it to configure whatever it needs.
