I'm an old man with an old Pioneer 114 DVD-ROM!

I know you guys are way beyond me in all manner of things, but I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I have an old 10x Pioneer DVD-ROM drive 114 I bought sometime in 1998. I never could use it to play movies because the PC I had was an old HP 6350 with a 333mhz CPU and the Power DVD software wouldn't work! Duh.

Anyway, I built a new PC from scratch and installed the old Pioneer. It worked fine for two movies and then 'shit-the-brick'! :( There is only one DVD that I can play; 'The Wild Bunch'! It's an old DVD (1996) and it's a two-sided disc, A & B. When I insert the disc, Power DVD powers up and plays the movie. All other DVD's result in the following dialog box: 'No disc or disc with unknown format in drive G:'! I'm sure it's not a region code problem. Can anyone come up with an answer for me?! I want to rip some DVD's to SVCD's and I can't get to first base if my DVD-ROM drive won't comply! :( Thanks everyone.

although i've never heard of such a problem myself, it would appear to me that the dvd-rom drive is incapable of reading dual-layered dvds. am i correct in guessing that all of the dvds u can't play are single-sided and dual-layered?

Guys,

I guess I should read a quick tutorial on DVD's (single-sided/dual-sided). All I can say is that I've tried to play Harry Potter, Catch me if you can, and, of all things, Battlefield Earth! Non of them are recognized by the DVD-ROM drive. I flashed the firmware to the latest version from Pioneer so I don't know where to go from here. What I do hear though when these DVD's are in the drive is a strange clunking noise! Go figure. Thanks for any input here.
