IE6 Prob & Hard Drive Light on constantly

Hi. I installed the Pro version of XP a few weeks ago, up until now it's been ok but Internet Explorer has got worse when I attempt to load it, it's slow and unresponsive, just like most of the functions on the O/S. I have 512mb ram, Athlon XP 1800 1.53ghz and 40gb hard drive. Can anyone help with this problem/is there a way to optimize it or reinstall IE? (There is no option in the control panel to reinstall IE) Also, my main problem is for the past couple of days, my hard drive has been active constantly, the light is on ALL THE TIME - how can I stop this and what has caused it to remain lit... it's really starting to p**s me off! Any help anyone can give would be a real bonus. Thanks.:(

if you have antivirus installed that can cause those kinds of probs....i had it happen with mcafee....i uninstalled it an re-installed it and everything was fine after...also as you upgraded is the antivirus compatible..??

Thanks for your info legless1 - yep, my antivirus IS compatible but I think I've solved the drive light, I altered my power management settings and it went off after 3 minutes.... As for IE6, that's something else... don't think anyone will ever work THAT out! Cheers.

vcd_pat....sorry i couldn't be of help....my ie slowed etc...and i remembered i'd just installed a data for the antivirus so i uninstalled it..re-installed it and ie stopped messing about....beats me... :)

vcd_pat, do you have kazaa installed? also, go to your task manager and see what is taking up CPU cycles. With nothing running, must of the CPU time should be taken by "System Idle Process".

Try this:
Open a command prompt.
type…
sfc(space)/purgecache (hit enter)
Reboot………

Open a command prompt.
type…
sfc(space)/scannow (hit enter)
Reboot………

If it's a dll related problem it'll be resolved.

If you have "Norton System Works" installed the program called "NOPDB.EXE" that will scan your Hard drive for a long time after statring up, which is in error, so Un-Installing it and re-installing can help....

had the same prog. try this link. h**p://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm it will help customize the servicies on your computer. It might be one of the many servicies in XP-pro that is causing the problem. from Alert to error logging. my problem stopped after I customized the servicies to my needs

@ cd546 Thanks for your valuable info mate - things don't seem to be half as bad now since following the advice I've had so far but I will definitely take a look at the url you've posted. :D
