they are OK, though lately IBM is starting to go downhill.
People first were saying they were the fastest & best, now all you hear is problems.
Maxtor started off as being bad ('cause of ATA133 standard) 'cause everyone saying just a marketing gimmick, but they proved to be about as fast as an IBM drive but cheaper & not as many complaints.
Believe me when I tell you, everyone has good & bad experiences with all drives/brands. I think western digital make some of the worst drives (but others love it). Likewise Quantum made the best & fastest & also some of the worst drives ever lol.
Just stay away from the 75Gig & 120Gig IBM drives & you should be ok (those are the ones with some issues I believe).

i had a really bad experience with ibm hard drive; i bought one and it crashed; i sent in for another brand new one and it still crashes periodically ; for the life of me, i dont know why it does crash; i basically just use it as a temporary redundant dump storage area b/c i m tired of fiddling with ibm.

The old IBM drives was really bad. But the new desktop series - 60 GXP, 120 GXP - are very fast and reliable. Or, if you have not enough confidence in IBM, maybe try a new ATA 133 drive from WD.
