i need help with outlook express (W2K)

im not sure if i got a virus or not but ever since yesterday, i can't receive any mail, but i can send out mail ok; when i do send/receive all, it shows that it's dl messages from the server but it never finished downloading, and then it gave me the error - the typical error when there's not enough bandwidth for it to download the messages; i have tried it with 2 of my computers at home here and have the same problem; i contacted the person hosting the mail server and he said there's no problem on the server side; i even try to use the email client on opera as well as install pocomail but same problem.

Even after i shut down outlook express, i still see the little icon in the system tray acting like it's downloading new mail, but it's been doing it for hours;

I did a norton virus scan but found no virus.

Anyone have any idea???

Thanks.

Ubamous3, you could go into Outlook Express, click tooks > accounts > mail, and your principal email account and check the settings (against the specs given by your ISP). Given that you're using Norton, check to make sure that the pop3 and smtp servers haven't been altered by Norton Antivirus to be norton.sumpthin.

If none of that works, try installing a mail client program like Mozilla Thunderbird and setup your account there. If you can receive mail, then you know it's not the mail server but OE that's the root of the problem.

hi catachresis,

thanks for responding. My smtp server and pop3 server are the same in this case (that's how my mail hosting guy set that up); i went to the manage accounts screen, andnothing looks unusual to me; i even tried to delete the accounts on OE and then added them back but no luck.

I currently use opera with its built in mail client (i have closed OE for a few hours now)and after every few minutes, there's a popup screen saying
"POP3 server unavailable. Network problems?" to both of my email accounts; i even had the same problem with pocomail, so i m kinda puzzled as the root of the problem.
But when i go to check mail on the web, it seems to be working ok with the same password and login ; go figure
